During French colonization of Algeria in Biskra, a scene was staged to show Algerian Muslims as accepting the situation. So they exposed them with their intelligence. Three local men were reportedly asked to act out a scene of prayer for the camera, so it could present an image of normal life under colonial rule. From the outside, the moment looks ordinary, just people following a routine. But instead of simple compliance, they quietly subverted the moment. While mimicking the motions, they exchanged knowing glances and are said to have whispered insults and curses under their breath.
