In 4 days, I’ll walk the London Marathon carrying 20kg, the same weight my son Hugh was in this video . Hugh died of cancer just two weeks after this video, which was his 6th birthday. Here he is blowing out his last ever candle. There should have been many more 💔 20kg is heavy. But not as heavy as watching your child die. Not as heavy as holding them through chemo. Wanting to hug a stranger going through treatment and say, “I respect you. I feel for you.” Turning off adverts about cancer. Lowering the volume when the “C word” is mentioned on the radio. Avoiding social events because you just don’t have the energy to explain. As a dad, you’re taught to be strong. To hold it all together. But what if holding it together means never truly healing? Grief doesn’t make you weak. It makes you real. And sharing it might be the strongest thing you ever do.
