Sledgehammer was released 40 years ago today! "As a teenager, soul music was one of the things that made me want to be a musician. It was really passionate and exciting... Wayne Jackson, who plays on that track, was also with Otis Redding and was touring with him when I saw them in London. So that was a thrill for me, just to get a whole lot of fan stories. But I think the song was more influenced by many of those Stax and Atlantic tracks rather than Otis particularly."

'Solsbury Hill' - Peter's debut solo single - was released on this day in 1977. In April 1977, Peter did an interview with Sounds discussing the song... "It's strange that Solsbury Hill is a single because at one point it wasn't even going to be on the album. I'm pleased with it, espeically from a "feel" point of view. It's got a kick time and that 7/4 rhythm works well because it feels like a normal rhythm but isn't quite right..."

“It was 37 years ago that ‘So' was the number 1 album and I never expected to be here again. I've just been told that we are number 1 in the UK with i/o, so it's amazing. I want to thank everyone that helped me make the album because it was a long, slow process, involving a lot of very talented people. But, mainly I need to thank all of you for supporting me for all this time and for making this happen. Thank you.” - pg Official Charts

'Don't Give Up', featuring Kate Bush, was released as a single from 'So' in 1986. "In ‘Don’t Give Up’ the lyrics were inspired by two things: one was a TV programme on how unemployment has affected family life and the other was a photograph taken by Dorothea Lange during the Dust Bowl Depression. The basic idea is that handling failure is one of the hardest things we have to learn to do."

‘I’m delighted to say that we will be beginning another year of full moon releases under the name o\i. The songs are a mix of thoughts and feelings. I have been thinking about the future and how we might respond to it. We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror. These are my lumpy bits – i/o: the inside has a new way out and o\i: the outside has a new way in. We are not, and have never been, the exclusively self-determining, independent beings that have been given the run of the world. We are something else, a part of nature, a part of everything and feeling a connection, shaking our booty and giving and receiving some love can help us find our place - and put a big smile on our faces. Some of these songs are going to form part of the brain project that I’ve been exploring for a number of years, and some just make me feel happy. I hope you like them.’

Peter was inducted as a solo artist into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on this day 12 years ago. "Watch out for music. It should come with a health warning. It can be dangerous. It can make you feel so alive, so connected to the people all around you, and connected to what you really are inside, and it can make you think that the world should and could be a much better place. And just occasionally it can make you very, very happy."

'Red Rain' performed live on Later with Jools Holland in 2011 with the New Blood Orchestra. “‘Red Rain’ was written after a dream I’d had about the sea being parted by two walls. There were these glass-like figures that would screw themselves into each wall, fill up with red blood and then be lowered across the sand, as it were to the next wall, where they’d unload the blood on the other side. I used to have these extremely vivid dreams that scared the hell out of me.”
