THE LETTER WASHINGTON NEVER SIGNED Letters from Stockholm — by Kio Amachree They have written the ending before the first ballot is printed. That is the conviction hardening among so many of us who love Nigeria from near and from far: that 2027 is not to be a contest but a coronation in the costume of one. The governors "delivered" their states like parcels. The security services quietly leaned upon. The machinery oiled, the umpires seated, the result drafted in advance and awaiting only the theatre of a campaign that the man at the centre may no longer have the stamina to perform. A script, in short — and a nation cast as an unwilling audience. But it is not the arrogance of the plan that stops me. It is the cheek of the paperwork. Consider the latest artefact laid before Nigerians: a letter said to come from President Trump, reportedly thanking Bola Tinubu for his "thoughtful" correspondence, praising his "decisive leadership," invoking a "US–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap" and even the deployment of American Special Operations Forces. A remarkable document. And yet it arrived not as the world expects such things to arrive. No White House stationery. No presidential seal. No Trump signature. Merely words — quoted in full, date and signature block and all — as though transcription were the same thing as proof. Set it beside the letter Washington sent Javier Milei of Argentina in the very same season: released as a scanned image, on official White House letterhead, bearing the President's own hand. That is what an authentic American presidential letter looks like. The Nigerian version, by contrast, is a paragraph in search of a provenance. Washington has confirmed nothing. And when even the opposition's own retained experts examine it, they stop short of the obvious word only out of professional caution — noting merely that it is "unusual" for a letter to be recited rather than shown. We are not so cautious, because we have seen this hand before. We saw it in the certificate saga that trailed him to INEC and into the courts. We have seen it again this very month in the grotesque affair of the so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council — a phantom agency that somehow secured office space in the Federal Secretariat, opened accounts at the Central Bank, and extracted 1.3 billion naira from the 2026 Appropriation Act on the strength of a forged letter bearing the Chief of Staff's falsified signature. A government that cannot keep forgeries out of its own budget now asks us to accept an unsigned foreign endorsement as gospel. This is a pattern, not an accident. A republic increasingly governed by paper — and paper of a very particular kind. Let us not pretend we do not know the origin of the method. This is the same man who, in Chicago in 1993, forfeited hundreds of thousands of dollars connected to a narcotics investigation — a matter of the public record, whatever the euphemisms his handlers now prefer. The instinct that treats documents as instruments to be manufactured rather than facts to be honoured did not begin in Aso Rock. It was merely brought there. And so we arrive at the harder question, the one that keeps honest people awake. Writing is not enough. Documenting the crimes of the APC — the captured institutions, the bribed umpires, the fabricated letters — is necessary, but it is not sufficient, because we are no longer dealing with a political party. A political party contests. A criminal organisation captures. The APC has crossed that line, and it must now be named for what it is and treated accordingly — in the courts of Nigeria, and in every jurisdiction abroad where its principals bank, buy property, and launder their reputations. That is the work. Refuse to legitimise a scripted result. Deny the forgeries the dignity of silence. Carry the evidence — the certificates, the phantom agencies, the unsigned letters — to the institutions that can freeze assets and revoke welcomes: the sanctions desks, the fraud offices, the international bodies that once acted against the Angolan kleptocrats and can act again. Build the record so completely that no future court, and no future generation, can plead ignorance. Nigeria cannot survive another four years of reckless misrule and manufactured mandates. The suffering is already unbearable; the insecurity, unforgivable. A people cannot eat a forged letter. And a nation of two hundred million was never meant to be inherited like an estate, on the strength of a signature no one in Washington ever put to paper. We are watching.
