A friend in Israel is my age with a young family. They are in a bomb shelter with an infant & children right now. He tells me — ‘morale is high; we’re exhausted & worse but in it to win it. And we feel fellowship profoundly with the Americans; we are part of something bigger than us.’ It’s a fellowship of free people, and one that I hope Iranians themselves may join after decades of brutal repression.

Secretary Rubio is heading to Panama to uphold the Monroe Doctrine. Problem is, Trump has the Doctrine backwards: rejecting outside influence in the Western Hemisphere means getting tough on China, not Panama. In his first term, Trump allowed China to renew leases for marine terminal operations in the Canal Zone and build big infrastructure throughout Latin America. So far in his second term, he's rolled over on TikTok, backed down on his Chinese tariff threats, and allowed the Communist Party to buy up his net worth in meme coins. Rubio & Trump need to stop bullying a small ally and start finding a spine against America's actual adversary: the Chinese Communist Party.

One idea, paradoxically, is to combine the problems: knit together NATO & the Abraham Accords thru defense, energy & infrastructure projects so that a greater Mediterranean community can contest Russia & Iran on both wings.

It would pass, and rewrite the toxic politics of immigration. Or he could do the predictable: a partisan immigration bill that doubles down on the failures of ICE for the rest of Trump’s term.
