For almost a week Jamaica held the international news headlines on Hurricane Melissa, as every major network provided wall-to-wall coverage of the historic storm. However, one of the features of the coverage which the international media might wish to consider is whether the sensational language used to describe the storm, especially ahead of its arrival, was overdone in the manner of the fabled boy who cried “wolf”.

Finance Minister Fayval Williams says Jamaica is seeing a “deluge” of duty-free packages, as some shoppers split orders or undervalue items to remain under the US$100 threshold. Responding to concerns raised by the Opposition spokesman on finance, Julian Robinson, who questioned whether the increase in the de minimis threshold was a policy contradiction, Williams said her reference to local retailers during her opening budget presentation was to highlight the unintended impact of the policy. She explained that the practice of “order splitting” is depriving the Government of revenue and placing added pressure on local businesses competing with untaxed imports. “The unforeseen consequence is that no revenue flows to the Treasury… that was simply not the intent of the policy.” (📷: Joseph Wellington, 🎥: Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica) #BudgetDebate #JamaicaObserver #AlwaysAhead #FayvalWilliams #Budget2026
