Remember when Sundays were really quiet? Most shops were shut, town centres were deserted and the roads seemed almost empty. Sunday lunch, the papers, a walk or a visit to relatives, the whole country seemed to slow down for a day. Do you miss Sundays like this? Film from 1957. #SundayMemories #RememberWhen #SocialHistory

This remarkable film was shot at Alexandra Palace London, in 1898 and shows visitors enjoying the newly installed Switchback Railway, an early ancestor of the modern roller coaster. The Switchback Railway, with its open carriages travelling over a series of rises and dips, must have seemed wonderfully thrilling to its Victorian passengers. who wern't strapped in and sat on a thin wooden bench The footage is particularly special because it was made by British film pioneer Robert W. Paul, who had built his film studio nearby at Muswell Hill. #VictorianBritain #AlexandraPalace

Queen Victoria’s final visit to Ireland, April 1900. At 80 years old, the Queen arrived in Dublin for a three-week visit, her first to Ireland in nearly 40 years. Huge crowds turned out to see her, although the visit came at a time of growing Irish nationalism. Victoria died just nine months later. #QueenVictoria #Ireland #History

South Shields, 1901. A remarkable glimpse of women gutting fish on the dockside. It was cold, wet and relentless work. The fish had to be cleaned quickly after being landed, and experienced women could work at astonishing speed with little more than a sharp knife and years of practice. Their hands were constantly wet and cold, their clothes spattered with scales and brine, yet this was skilled work and an important part of the fishing trade. #1900s #WorkingWomen #SocialHistory

January 1917, and Holland is in the grip of winter. I love seeing the traditional clothing in this old film, the bonnets, caps, and long skirts make these scenes feel like another world. With frozen waterways and snow covered streets, people simply carried on with everyday life through a bitter Dutch winter. The Netherlands remained neutral during the First World War, but life was far from untouched by the conflict, with shortages, rationing and hundreds of thousands of refugees crossing its borders. #Netherlands #1900s

During the First World War, “Flag Days” became a familiar sight across Britain. Women and girls stood in busy streets with collecting tins, offering small Union Jack flags on pins in return for a donation. The money raised supported causes including wounded soldiers, military hospitals, servicemen’s families, refugees and comforts for troops at the Front. These women were just one small part of Britain’s huge wartime fundraising effort, collecting pennies that together made a real difference. #WW1 #HomeFront #WomenInHistory

The summer of 1947 was a scorcher! After one of the coldest winters in living memory, Britain suddenly went from freezing to frying. Temperatures hit 34.4°C (94°F) in June, and by August they were back up around 34°C (93°F) in places. What is interesting in this film is the way everyone is dressed in a heatwave! #1940s #BritishHistory #Heatwave

London Underground in the 1950s. A familiar sight on the Piccadilly line was the red 1938 Stock, complete with distinctive little round ‘porthole’ windows in some of the end doors, and large windows. These wonderful old trains remained in service for decades. #LondonUnderground #1950s #LondonHistory #PiccadillyLine

Paris, 1896, Avenue des Champs-Élysées. A governess watches over her three young charges on one of the world's most famous avenues. The sand beneath the trees and along the roadside is there to provide a softer surface for pedestrians as well as helping horse drawn carriage wheels grip the road, it also served as a great distraction for young children! #Paris #France #1890s #Victorian #Streetlife #History #HistsoryLovers #BelleEpoque #FrenchHistor

🥚 Preston's great egg rolling tradition, captured forever. In 1901, the pioneering filmmakers Mitchell & Kenyon turned their camera on the crowds gathered for Preston's famous Easter Monday egg rolling. Thousands packed the hillside, in Avenham Park smiling, waving, and enjoying one of Lancashire's most cherished traditions. Children would roll painted eggs down a hill and see whose could go the furthest without breaking. What makes this film so special isn't just the event—it's the faces. Ordinary people, unknowingly leaving behind a priceless snapshot of Edwardian life more than 120 years ago. #Preston #MitchellAndKenyon #EggRolling #1901 #Lancashire #Edwardian #BritishHistory #History #HistoryLovers #EarlyFilm #OldFilm

I definitely think we should have more of this in our lives. Motor chariot racing held at Crystal Palace in 1925 I think this football ground is The Nest ( the team moved from there in 1924 to Selhurst Park. ) If you think differently please let me know. #SelhurstPark #TheNest #SouthLondon #FootballHistory #1920s #CrystalPalace

Everyday life around Shepherd Market, Mayfair, in the spring and summer of 1947. London was still living with rationing, shortages and the scars of war, but daily life carried on. Shops opened, deliveries arrived, pubs and cafés welcomed customers and the narrow streets bustled with pedestrians. After the bitter winter of 1946–47, the warm summer must have felt particularly welcome, a fascinating glimpse of post-war London slowly finding its feet again. #1940s #LondonHistory #SocialHistory

Pendlebury Colliery, 1901. The smiling miners captured by Mitchell & Kenyon had just finished shifts of up to 12 hours, working hundreds of metres underground in heat, dust and darkness. Crawling through narrow seams, they faced roof collapses, explosions and poisonous gases—The miners shown here would probably have earned around 30–35 shillings a week, enough to support a family but with very little left over after rent, food and coal. #History #Mining #Edwardian #1900s #IndustrialHistory

Young girls dancing to a barrel organ in Dury Lane, Covent Garden London in 1896. In 1895, barrel organs were a familiar sound on the streets of British towns and cities, particularly London. Long before radios and record players became household possessions, they brought popular music directly to the street. Sound has been added to the film.

Westminster Bridge, London, 1896. Crowds of pedestrians cross the Thames alongside horse-drawn omnibuses, hansom cabs, carts and private carriages. The clatter of hooves and iron-rimmed wheels filled the air as thousands made their daily journey through Victorian London. Colourised with added sound. #London #Westminster #VictorianLondon #1890s #SocialHistory
