🥚 Preston's great egg rolling tradition, captured forever. In 1901, the pioneering filmmakers Mitchell & Kenyon turned their camera on the crowds gathered for Preston's famous Easter Monday egg rolling. Thousands packed the hillside, in Avenham Park smiling, waving, and enjoying one of Lancashire's most cherished traditions. Children would roll painted eggs down a hill and see whose could go the furthest without breaking. What makes this film so special isn't just the event—it's the faces. Pendlebury Colliery, 1901. The smiling miners captured by Mitchell & Kenyon had just finished shifts of up to 12 hours, working hundreds of metres underground in heat, dust and darkness. Crawling through narrow seams, they faced roof collapses, explosions and poisonous gases—The miners shown here would probably have earned around 30–35 shillings a week, enough to support a family but with very little left over after rent, food and coal. #History #Mining #Edwardian #1900s #IndustrialHistory
