The prison version of Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” short film directed by the legendary Spike Lee, was released on this date in 1996, this version was the second short film for the single, following the “Brazil Version" released in March 1996 that’s also directed by Spike Lee. It was filmed inside of New York Correctional Facility depicts MJ as an inmate to symbolize mass incarceration and systemic injustice. It is juxtaposed with archival footage of historical human rights violations and police brutality. Due to its controversial and "hard-driven" imagery, the prison version was largely banned from daytime television on major music channels like MTV and VH1, leading to the creation of the more "radio-friendly" Brazil version as the primary promotional clip.
