Elon Musk explains why school feels so boring School often gets learning backwards. Elon: "you want to teach to the problem instead of teaching the tools" Start with something real. Elon: "here's a car engine, we're going to try to understand how this car engine works. We're going to take it apart." To take it apart, you need tools. Elon: "along the way, you learn about wrenches and screwdrivers and all the tools that are needed" But that's not how school usually works. Elon: "we're going to teach you a course on screwdrivers and a course on wrenches. And you're like, why do I have a course on wrenches?" It's like learning to cook. A year of knife drills is torture. "Let's make tacos tonight" and you learn the knife in a day. Elon: "That would be like, say, a course on calculus without explaining what calculus is useful. And then you sort of forget it." Give people the "why" first. The "how" sticks.

"Don't send the young. Send us." Fukushima, 2011. The reactors were melting. A 72-year-old grandfather named Yasuteru Yamada made a call. 700 grandfathers answered. Their logic was devastating: "Radiation takes 30 years to kill. We'll be dead anyway. Our grandchildren won't." Old lives for young futures. A shield made of grandfathers. They volunteered to walk into lethal poison so their grandkids would never have to. This is who we are. Japanese elders ready to die, so the next generation can live.

Elon Musk explains how deleting one part saved Tesla a $2 million robot Tesla's battery line was choking on fiberglass mats. First, Elon tried to make the process better. Elon: "automating was a mistake, then accelerating was a mistake, then optimizing was a mistake" Then he asked the obvious question. Elon: "what the hell are these mats for?" The battery safety team said: "they're for noise and vibration." The noise and vibration team said: "fire safety." Nobody actually owned the reason. So they tested a car with the mats and without. Elon: "In fact, I was like, which one is which?" It's like a drawer full of cables you've kept "just in case." You could buy a fancy organizer. Or you could throw them out. Elon: "So we just deleted them and just bypassed this $2 million robot cell" The best part is no part.
