If you come to Tokyo and only visit Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza, you’re seriously missing out. Go to Jimbocho. It was ranked #1 in “World’s Coolest Neighborhoods” in 2025. Around 130-170 bookstores and secondhand bookshops. One of the largest book towns in the world. But honestly, for me, it’s all about the food. This neighborhood is packed with legendary curry spots. My favorites: Rice Curry Manten Ando Suriranka Tokyo Ebi Maru Ramen Always busy for a reason. How to spend a half day: Wander the historic used bookstores. Even if you can’t read Japanese, the atmosphere is worth it. Take a break at Sabouru, a retro kissaten that feels like stepping back in time. Finish with a bowl of Jimbocho’s famous curry. Just a short train ride from central Tokyo. A completely different side of the city that most tourists never see. Here’s a video from my last visit to Jimbocho. Have you heard of Jimbocho?

If you come to Tokyo, skip okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Get monjayaki instead. Most tourists have never even heard of it. Monjayaki is Tokyo's own street food. Born in the shitamachi, the old downtown. Think okonomiyaki, but way more liquid. You press it against the iron griddle with a tiny spatula, scraping up the crispy bits as you go. It's messy. It's fun. It's addictive. Head to Tsukishima. There's an entire street dedicated to monjayaki, just a few minutes by train from Ginza. My go-to spots: Tsukishima Monja Koboreya Bettei Multiple locations in the same area. Clean, reliable, always good. Monja Tsukushiya Hon Ten The staff cook it for you. Everything on the menu is incredible. Mentaiko cheese monjayaki. Baby Star Ramen topping. Don't skip it. And after you eat, walk over to Kyuei, a bakery right on monjayaki street. Get the freshly baked melon pan. Locals have been going there for years. One of the highest-rated bakeries in the area. The perfect way to end the meal. Have you heard of monjayaki? I'll attach a video from the last time I had monjayaki.

If you’re visiting Kyoto, here’s a perfect day trip you probably didn’t expect. A route where you can visit the Nintendo Museum, eat amazing mazemen, and see a World Heritage site — all in one day. Nintendo Museum — About 30 minutes by train from Kyoto Station. Tickets are distributed by lottery, and applications open three months in advance, so reservations are essential. On weekends and holidays, the odds can be 30 to 1 or even higher, making it one of the most competitive tickets in Japan. When I finally visited, it brought back so many memories. All the games I used to play as a kid kept appearing one after another. I even tried Mario Kart with a giant controller and somehow got first place🤣 The shop is full of exclusive items you can only buy here, and I definitely bought way too many T-shirts haha. Seikou Udoku — About 4 minutes by taxi or 20 minutes on foot from Nintendo Museum. I was looking for a good ramen spot in Uji and decided to try this place. It turned out to be really good. Their spicy mazemen is seriously addictive. After finishing the bowl, I immediately thought, “I want to come back again.” If you like spicy food or curry-style flavors, I highly recommend it. It’s also very highly rated, so it’s easy to see why locals love it. Byodo-in Phoenix Hall — About 7 minutes by taxi or 20 minutes on foot from Seikou Udoku. A UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for appearing on the 10-yen coin. The building looks like it’s floating on the pond, and the view is absolutely beautiful. I’ve visited several times, and every time I come back, I’m impressed all over again. If you visit Kyoto, this is a place you shouldn’t miss. Uji turned out to be a much more packed and rewarding day than I expected. I’ve attached a video from my previous visit, so feel free to check it out.
