Wizkid is sending a message to the Grammys: “You can’t box me just because I’m African!” By reportedly submitting Long Live Lagos for Best Music Film, Wizkid appears to be making a statement: I belong in the big league, competing with the biggest names in the world! For him, it may not even be about winning or getting nominated. It’s about proving that African artists belong on the global stage without being boxed into a separate category.

Take WIZKID and OLAMIDE out of the conversation first. Now let’s compare DAVIDO and BURNA BOY. How does an artist who has NEVER had a true global hit, when even Asake has had a global hit, wake up and say “Nobody has more hits than me”? The only reason I would even say Davido has more hits than Burna Boy is because Davido has been around longer and has more songs in his catalogue. That’s it. But when it comes to GLOBAL HITS? Burna Boy has more global hits than Davido. So what exactly is “nobody has more hits than me” based on?

Piper apologize to Wizkid feels less like an apology and more like regret. Back then, respect was easy to overlook. Today, after seeing how far Wizkid has come and the legacy he’s built, the conversation has changed. If Wizkid hadn’t gone on to become one of the biggest artists in the world, I don’t think we’d be having this apology today. Sometimes people don’t apologize because they suddenly understand your value—they apologize because they realize they misjudged it.
