During World War 2, nearly a third of the British army were from the Indian subcontinent. They made up the largest volunteer army ever in history. But we still rarely remember these Sikhs, Muslims & Hindus. This VE Day we must remain firm in our pursuit of the truth. #VEDay80

On Eid, one of the most important days in the Muslim calendar, access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem has been restricted by Israeli authorities, with many Palestinians prevented from entering and forced to pray outside. Reports also indicate restrictions affecting Christian worshippers, including access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City. Emerging reports this morning say Israeli forces confronted worshippers outside the Old City, with tear gas reportedly used against those gathered for prayer. These developments raise concerns that heightened security measures are further restricting freedom of worship and movement for Palestinians. I raised the situation at Al-Aqsa in Parliament yesterday, highlighting ongoing concerns about restrictions even following the ceasefire. The Israeli government should uphold international law, ensure freedom of worship, and engage in meaningful diplomacy to support a just and lasting peace.

Jagtar Singh Johal is a British national who has been detained in India for over 7 years. This week Jagtar was finally acquitted in the first case brought to court after nearly a decade incarcerated. We must continue to fight for his release & bring Jagtar home. #FreeJaggiNow

It was an honour to deliver my maiden speech in the House of Commons. Aged 7 I arrived from the Punjab, Ilford gave me a home, an education & the opportunity to build a better future. It is a privilege to serve Ilford South & fight for my neighbours. 🔗

Today is Jagtar's 39th birthday. But instead of celebrating with his family and friends, he is languishing in a foreign prison. When he was acquitted on 1 of the 8 counts brought against him in March last year, there was real hope that justice would prevail. But a year later, little tangible progress has been made. If we cannot defend our citizens who are unlawfully imprisoned abroad, we risk becoming beholden to the whims of others, rather than standing firm on principle. I cannot urge the Government in stronger terms to make meaningful representations to our Indian counterparts to bring Jagtar Singh Johal home.

This week marks one of the darkest times in recent Sikh history; 41 years since the raid on the Golden Temple - one of the holiest Gurdwaras in the Sikh faith. The pain has not subsided all these years later. Promises made in Opposition for an independent inquiry into Britain's involvement in the desecration of the Golden Temple, must now be upheld in Government. I asked Lucy Powell MP if the Foreign Secretary could provide an update on the progress of implementing this inquiry.
