When thinking of corollaries from the benchtops of science that translate to the boardrooms of business, physicist Kenneth Libbrecht’s growth chambers, where a snow crystal’s fate is decided by the environmental conditions around it, comes to mind. Temperature sets the basic form; the amount of water vapor available decides whether it grows as a compact faceted prism or sprawls into fragile lacework. Abundance is what produces the sprawl. When vapor is plentiful, whichever tip juts furthest ahead intercepts the most of it, grows faster still, and branches again, a runaway that yields something, albeit beautiful, but fragile and easily broken. Scarcity is what builds the resilient, sturdy hexagon. Companies branch much the same way. The division that pulls ahead tends to attract the budget, the attention, the best hires, which lets it pull further ahead. What emerges isn’t strength but sprawl: a shape held together by conditions that may not hold. The most enduring organizations treat abundance as the moment demanding the most discipline, investment in people before complexity, investment in culture before scale, investment in systems before speed.
