The volatility - yes, volatility - in AR 4366 is absolutely unbelievable. I don't think I have ever used the word 'volatility' to describe an active region. The X-ray flux has been mostly above the M-class threshold for *35 hours* now. There have been 25+ M-class and 4 X-class flares. It is unfortunate that most of these flares are impulsive, else we'd have a train of CMEs en route and likely impacting by now. Even so, the show is incredible, one of the highlights of Solar Cycle 25 - we will be talking about this for a long time!

Wow! What a beautiful filament eruption and a C3.8 flare on the west limb this afternoon (UTC)! Earth for scale. Note the post-flare loops in the source region of the flare, AR 4288. Look at that '8' / infinity shape.

Here is comet C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy) passing perihelion on December 16th, 2011. This too was a very small Kreutz comet, but it managed to survive perihelion, brightening to around magnitude -4. As bright as Venus. The comet survived the perihelion passage, but disintegrated four days later, emerging in the twilight sky as a headless comet. Note how dramatically the comet brightens as it approaches perihelion! Comet MAPS should also undergo rapid brightening - if it does not fall apart.

BOOM! X13.3 flare. This one is noteworthy as it happened three years after solar maximum and only two years before solar minimum. Hopefully we get the next one soon ...
