We spent decades engineering friction out of our lives. Drive-throughs, curbside pickup, one-click everything. The strip center was the temple we built to convenience, and it worked. You can get in and out without ever making eye contact with another human being. But that friction we were so eager to kill? A lot of it was the good kind. It was the slow checkout line where you run into somebody you know or the cramped parking lot where you stop and talked to your 2nd grade teacher. Main Street was never the convenient option. You have to park and walk a block or two, and maybe wait on a red light along the way. You bump into people. The coffee shop and the hardware store and the barber all sit shoulder to shoulder, and so do the people who use them. That wasn’t a design flaw. It was a feature. Convenience gets you your errands done faster. Friction gets you a community. Turns out you can’t have both, and I think we picked incorrectly in the last handful of decades. I’m just as guilty of choosing convenience over community at times, but it’s not a mistake I want to continue to make and that’s the point of what we try to show on Texas Country Reporter.
