Back then, as we walked hand in hand through shabby alleyways, when I was still smaller than her I thought that: 'when I grow taller than Mom, I’m going to protect her'. my mother ran a barbecue restaurant in our neighborhood, and she also ran a spicy fish stew place, small local restaurants she managed entirely by herself. when it got really busy, I would go helping out and serving. at the barbecue restaurant, cleaning the grill plates was the hardest job, and at the spicy fish stew place, cleaning the fish tank was the toughest thing. When I was young, the goal really loomed large: I have to make sure Mom doesn’t suffer, I have to make things easier for her, I don’t want her to worry about money.
