Bottom of the ninth. Tie game. Bases loaded. Full count. The dream scenario. And ... Cal Conley didn't get set in the batter's box with 8 seconds left on the pitch clock. Umpire calls an automatic strike. At-bat over. Inning over. This is the new reality.

Shohei Ohtani has left his start in the middle of an at-bat after throwing six consecutive balls, two of which were yanked fastballs that were wild pitches.

I love baseball for countless reasons but a well-executed swim-move slide is near the top of the list and this one from Juan Soto is absolute perfection.

Corbin Burnes just left his start for Arizona after an apparent arm injury. His cutter velocity had dipped two to three ticks before that.

The league-wide batting average this postseason is .212. The average fastball is 96.2 mph. Hitting is hard. In the postseason, it's Sisyphean. To better understand why, we spoke with Joey Votto and Alex Bregman, two of the purest hitters of this generation, for their insight.

Really enjoyed this breakdown from Alex Bregman and Joey Votto on Shohei Ohtani's struggles and the difficulties of playing hurt in the postseason. It's constant grind mode, it's band-aiding, it's buying yourself another day only to run into the reality that days are dwindling.

The Dodgers' local-TV deal is a profound competitive advantage. Because of a bankruptcy-court ruling, the team will shield more than $1.3 billion from rev sharing over 25 years. What you might not know: They further monetized it through debt deals with Mark Walter-owned insurers.

Joey Votto's explanation of how difficult it is to pull the ball in the air is exceptional. Fly balls and line drives to the pull side have a .584 batting average and 1.313 OPS this year, so more and more players are being encouraged and taught to do it. But it's not easy.

Last week, I asked every MLB team to speak with its owner on camera. They’re less than three months from shutting down the sport via a lockout, and I wanted to hear their explanation for why they think a salary cap is worth the fallout that's bound to come. None agreed to talk.

The city with the most compelling case for MLB expansion right now: Salt Lake City. It's got an owner. It's got a public-private partnership to fund a stadium. And it's got a site that's already being developed. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox talked with us about how far ahead SLC is.

It's been 10 years since Dee Strange-Gordon hit one of the most incredible home runs in baseball history. It came the day after one of his best friends, José Fernández, died, and he's convinced it was divine intervention.

I’ve been watching a lot of the Juco World Series this week on ESPN+, and it’s the purest form of baseball I’ve seen in ages. No K zone. No radar gun. Dodgy field. Just guys chasing dreams and a ring. I couldn't love it more. Especially considering this is who’s pitching tonight.

CJ Abrams is the hottest hitter on the planet. Post-All-Star break, Abrams leads MLB in OPS (1.632), HR (7) and RBIs (15). He has more homers by himself in the second half than the Blue Jays, Orioles, Mariners, Twins, White Sox, Cardinals and Angels.

This is one of the most spectacular grand slams you’ll ever see. The swing, the reaction, everything. Vlad Jr. in the ALDS: 6 for 7. The entire Yankees team in the ALDS: 6 for 44.

Dave Roberts always wondered if part of the Blue Jays' calculus for intentionally walking Shohei Ohtani during the 18-inning Game 3 was to tire him out before his Game 4 start. So he asked John Schneider -- and the answer is an illuminating look into World Series strategy.

This is what it looks like when a guy throws 66 fastballs and every single one of them is in triple digits. The average: 102.8 mph.

An all-time pitching performance by Jacob Misiorowski. He threw a one-hit Maddux and punched 15. The most in a >99-pitch shutout before was Tarik Skubal's 13. This is Miz finding out in real time what he can be. The velocity is mind-bending. All of it is.

The Seattle Mariners were a chic World Series pick this year. Three-quarters of the way through the season, they are arguably the most disappointing team in baseball. What happened?
