Here’s the thing about “ugly fuck”-gate. James Talarico actually seems to understand something that the median Democratic comms staffer in Washington clearly does not. If Democrats want to seriously compete in places like Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, etc. this cycle, then there is simply no such thing as too much moderation—especially if you’re the kind of Democrat who was recently saying there are six biological sexes, God is nonbinary, being white requires apology, the southern border should be a welcome mat, or campaigns ought to go vegan. Cursing out Stephen Miller doesn’t help them get where they’re ostensibly looking to go.

You’re seeing this new phenomenon on both the dissident Right and Left where winning and governing no longer really seem to be the goal. The goal is to stoke outrage, crash the system, let things burn, and monetize the chaos. That mindset makes sense for podcasters. Less so for politicians.

There is plenty of room for ideological diversity within the GOP—even more so than within today’s Democratic Party—but you do have to be willing to engage in a productive working relationship with President Trump. There is room for hawks and restrainers, populists and technocrats. What there isn’t room for are conspiratorial slop mongers and obsessively anti-Trump cranks like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie. I made this point to POLITICO's Daniel Lippman on NEWSMAX the other day.
