A small band of mustangs consisting of a stallion and two hearty mares in the first snows of winter. Northern Nevada. It’s a rough life for them when the snow falls. We’ve become friends, mainly because I help them out a little with hay. I’m not supposed to, but who’s going to stop me? Those of you who continuously tell me I shouldn’t do that can kiss my feathered ass🥴

This is a wild stallion. We simply call him The Mustang. We all know which one. He rules the roost out here. He’s got a large band, and nothing trespasses on “his property” without his permission. He’s energetic smart and strong. He’ big..and has used his huge neck and shoulder muscles to kick bite and stomp his way to the top of the horse hierarchy. He tolerates me here because he considers me insignificant.

It’s a rough life This stallion is a good friend of mine, Blaze..we go way back. He showed up recently alone and forlorn looking battered and hungry. He wore the marks of a violent battle…and I’m pretty sure he lost his band to another stallion. From the looks of it he didn’t go down without a fight. I brought him a quarter bale of hay and a bucket of water to ease the pain…which he very much appreciates. And before any of you know-it-all’s tell me I shouldn’t be feeding wild horses..I would do the same for you if I saw you standing out there in 100° heat

Mustang lore They’re just passin’ through: Near a neighborhood on the outskirts of Winnemucca Nevada I pulled over to stop for a couple bands of mustangs crossing the road. I get out to turn my camera on them… when the two big stallions in charge (Don’t even think of telling them they’re not in charge.. they certainly think they are) boldly come right up into my face to check me out! One are them it gives me the complete circuit coming within inches of me! Once he determines I’m not a threat to his charges he gallops off with the rest of the mares and foals. I can tell you even Hawk was just a little nervous with that big son of a gun eyeing me up close! The thing to remember is a wild stallion can kick your ass any day of the week🥴 Don’t piss them off!! Sound on

To befriend a wild horse! Takes time..and quiet respect. Not because mustangs demand respect, but because without it you will never get within half a mile of them…and the stallion will see you long before you get anywhere near them. And here he comes, my good friend Blaze. Born in my “backyard”…I knew his parents also. The mares will hold back, they are a bit shy. Blaze approaches Hawk..showing them that I am not a threat. You are watching a strange inter-species spiritual connection.. I can’t quite explain it…I can only tell you that it exists.

Wild in Nevada, the heart of the west. Some friends of mine gather in the backyard. This small herd stays for a day or two then moves into the wild hills to the east.. staying near Arrowhead Creek . They feel comfortable here, they know Hawk is their friend. You may hear some munching, I usually bring carrots😉❤️
