Silence is not an option. Childhood innocence is non-negotiable. The Natural Women’s Council has serious concerns about school book content. Tonight I attended an EVENT AT A GAELSCOIL in Churchtown, South Dublin, on Smartphones, Social Media, and Our Children’s Mental Health, hosted by Eoghan Cleary—teacher, SPHE book author and mainstream media contributor. The content was informative, evidence-based, and at times, harrowing. It rightly challenged us to think hard about the damage screens and social media are doing to young minds. Whilst we’re rightly concerned about what children are exposed to online, it is imperative that we don’t ignore what children are exposed to in the CLASSROOM. Parents from this school contacted the Natural Women’s Council privately with concerns about Mr. Cleary’s book content. We had no knowledge of this event. What is interesting is that, although Mr Cleary hosted the event, his name was omitted from the event promotion. Two letters were sent to the Principal with excerpts from the books and evidence from the Dept of Education showing that the books are neither risk assessed nor signed off. We extended an open offer to host a parent’s night on the curricula. I made the two-hour round trip journey - not to disrupt, but to be a voice. A voice for parents. A voice for children. Some shouted me down. Some didn’t want to hear. But I ask: if a mother raises child safeguarding concerns—shouldn’t we all listen? Or is it easier to pretend it’s not happening? Topics like “violent, forced sex”, “gender” ideology, “class contracts” , and “masturbation” do not belong in classroom materials for children. Telling a child they can change their sex is not neutral education—it’s ideology. A medical doctor and a primary school teacher also expressed their concerns, yet they were shouted down by some - and the rest followed. We must protect childhood. Screens aren’t the only threat.
