In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins says that exceptional leaders channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company. I would take it one step further and say that exceptional leaders channel their energy into the larger goal of building not just a great company, but great PEOPLE around them. These exceptional leaders want their friends to win. They want their coworkers to succeed. They want to create not great followers out of those around them, but great leaders.
