Thirteen years ago, on an Ash Wednesday like today, Pope Benedict XVI—notoriously against his will—received a long applause from the Cardinals and all those present in Saint Peter's Basilica. Only God knows how many of those there present contributed to his resignation.

His Beatitude Mar Polis III Nona (Paul III Nona) is the new Patriarch of the Chaldean Church of Babylon. He was elected on April 12 and enthroned on May 29 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Baghdad, Iraq. Chaldean Catholics are largely Eastern-rite Assyrians who entered into communion with the Catholic Church in the 16th century. The name “Chaldean” does not indicate direct descent from the ancient Chaldeans of Babylon (the people mentioned in the Holy Scriptures), but was adopted for historical and biblical reference (Abraham came from “Ur of the Chaldees”). Today they represent one of the largest Christian communities in Iraq and in the diaspora. May Our Lord bless Mar Polis III Nona with wisdom and strength to guide his people!

Father Elvir Tabaković, MSC, newly ordained, celebrated his first Mass in Rome at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. In this altar are the relics of the manger, where the Child Jesus lay, in the grotto of Bethlehem. That is why the original name of the Basilica is ‘Sancta Maria ad Praesepe’. These photographs are wonderful. God is great!

Impressive images of the storm that struck Ecône during the Mass of Consecration of new Bishops. Holy Communion was about to be distributed, but it became impossible due to the immense rain that was falling incessantly. It was announced over the microphone that the Rosary would be prayed to ask for help from Our Lady. The Rosary was sung in Latin, with almost everyone kneeling. In the fifth decade, prayers were offered for the Holy Father and for the Bishops. Once the Rosary was finished, the storm stopped. Video: @perdiefilms

Good Friday is the only day of the year on which the Holy Mass cannot be celebrated, because we commemorate Our Lord dead upon the Cross for our sins. The liturgical ceremony of that day, until the reform of Holy Week in 1955, was known as Feria Sexta in Parasceve. This term derives from the Greek παρασκευή (paraskeué), meaning “preparation.” It was the name given by the Jews to the day before the Sabbath—the day of preparation for the strict observance of rest on the Sabbath—when food and other necessities had to be made ready beforehand. In the liturgy, Parasceve refers to Good Friday (Feria VI in die Parasceves), the day of the crucifixion of Jesus. On this day, the liturgy is distinguished by the so‑called “Mass of the Presanctified,” a rite involving the consumption of the pre‑sanctified species—that is, the Host consecrated on the preceding day—following the solemn Adoration of the Cross and the Great Litany.

Traditional Mass in Cameroon. Here we see the beginning of the Roman Canon: “Te igitur”, followed by the kiss on the altar and the three crosses over the host and the chalice. Then, a bow of the head towards the Missal when the name of the Pope is said (…una cum famulo tuo Papa nostro Leone…).

Our Lady Runs in the Square in Sulmona (Italy) From afar, the Virgin recognizes her Risen Son. In an instant, her black mantle and veil fall away, revealing a splendid green dress adorned with gold and a vivid red rose, as twelve doves rise into the air. At exactly noon, Our Lady begins her run through the square, amid the applause of the crowd. When Our Lady reaches her Son, the brothers of the confraternity embrace one another, often moved to tears. It is a tradition renewed for many years thanks to the Confraternity of Santa Maria del Loreto in Sulmona.
