In John’s song “Proud Mary,” the line “pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans” is sometimes misheard as “pane” or, as Tina Turner famously sang it, “tane”—which some have taken to mean propane or octane. But John has confirmed that the original lyric is, in fact, pain.

I have been waiting my entire career for this moment, and I am honored to share it with my family and with you! It’s finally done!

What a night. Last night John had the incredible honor of receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. To be recognized in this way, for his songs, means more to him than he can really put into words.

Fortunate Son is a song I wrote during the Vietnam War, inspired by the stark contrast between those who were drafted to fight and die for their country and those who had the privilege to avoid the draft because of their wealth and connections.

Between 1967 and 1969, John entered one of the most extraordinary creative runs in rock history. After active duty, his view of the world had changed - and so had the songs. What followed was a flood of music:
