I don’t think it’s possible to fully explain to someone who has never been to Eastern Kentucky the enormous impact Philip Haywood had on the region. Not only was he the winningest head coach in the history of KHSAA football, but he inspired tens of thousands of young people from the Big Sandy and Tug Fork valleys to find greatness in themselves. He understood the impact that a winning football team (and by extension a winning attitude) had on a community and its people. It didn’t matter where you were from or who you were, you could succeed. In 2021, Camille Gear Courtney Layne Brewer and I had the honor of covering the team that proved those things. The 2021 Belfry Pirates started out the season 0-5 and rebounded to win a state championship. That season was a microcosm of everything he stood for. Eastern Kentucky will never be the same without him. My prayers are with his family, the Belfry Football community, and all people in the mountains. Rest in peace, coach 🕊️
