Brian Hartline Brian Hartline 👂 “I tried to explain to guys, the art of playing WR is like knowing what I’m doing and keeping it a secret as long as possible, and the DB is just trying to figure out what your running.” “I love guys that play at max capacity. If you’re only a 4.6 I want you playing at 4.6.” 🛎️ “If you’re already fast and you don’t play fast like we’re in alert.” David Pollack

Cooper Kupp on routes on air with intent… You know what we used to call that? Deja Vu.. -Edelman. “Because once you know what’s coming, that’s when techniques and your superpowers get to come out” -Edelman “Unconscious competence.” -Sean McVay I’m sure some sports scientist somewhere has a problem with this line of thinking. I tend to side with elite athletes who are students of the game and put the work into understanding the game holistically when they articulate things. 🤷🏻

Great story here from Jon Kitna about Chad Johnson 👇Chad Johnson “You can be one of the best that’s ever played this game, but you gotta increase your conditioning level, and he took that and ran with it. From that point forward, he would take every rep in practice; he wouldn’t let anybody come in. In fact, he would start taking scout team reps; then he would go on scout team punt return.” “That was really the kickoff point for him; he became such great condition he never got tired any more, and then it was over for the rest of the DB’s in that league.”

Classic Mike Leach talking Vertical for the outside WR here: “If you can see the ball thrown all the better because you can adjust to it.” “The most important time to take a peak is as the defender begins to turn.” “Marino drill” builds chemistry with the QB “If I’ve got that guy pinned put a lot of air under the ball, let the wr adjust to the ball, you want to get accurate all of a sudden have your QB put air under the ball.” “I can’t believe how accurate he is?!? Well the WR did half the work. The WR had plenty of time to run to and adjust to the football.” “A lot of it was the technique with his eyes” “Keep in mind There is a value even when you miss.” “Quarterbacks make decisions, receivers run routes.” “The WR is not entitled to guess oh gee he might throw it behind me”

Randy Moss….student of the game and preparation: “If you’re prepared, you’re ready to rock and roll.” A common WR coach phrase, “You’re not Randy Moss”…In his dominant years, Moss was extremely prepared, w/ countless stories showcasing his football IQ. His ceiling was the greatest WR ever, Hall of Famer, but everyone has their own ceiling to reach. Be prepared and stay a student. Create your own luck—football is full of politics and bad breaks. All you can do is position yourself to make everything align in your favor! 👂

Brian Hartline Brian Hartline here: WR Rotation Recruiting WRs Route Running “You can have the ability in the world but if you can’t maximize it you will be passed up.” “There’s nothing more alarming in my opinion- a fast guy that’s doesn’t play fast because there’s a disconnect there.” “If you’re got 6 you don’t have 2.” “If I’m pulling a player off the field, you have to be able to come in and compete at that exact same level level or I’m doing a disservice to the Oline, the RB, QB….” “There’s 500 Wr’s running curl routes where do you stack your curl route up compared to somebody else’s.” “It’s not about that you run the route it’s how you run the route.” “That’s the biggest nemesis of greatness, it’s finding productivity when you don’t have to give it your all because you can find your lull showing up and it will catch you at the worse times.” Eleven Warriors

A powerful insight from Puka Puka Nacua “Everybody always talks about acceleration and deceleration especially at our position.” “Changed my thought process like man I’m accelerating down I’m not decelerating I’m accelerating down because at the top of the route I’m like ok I wanna keep that energy that I have into the break—out of the break.” Do not sacrifice your breakpoint! 🚨 Of course, literally, you are decelerating, but on the best routes, it’s as if you’re accelerating into the breakpoint. Guess what? That may not allow for perfect footwork at the top. Too often, I see WRs decelerate too much just to get that perfect footwork. This telegraphs to the DB. Sounds familiar Mike Vannucci ? Games with Names *This is NOT to downplay the footwork at the top, still important*

Good story here—Phil Bennett on Aaron Glenn: “I want to be a coordinator,” he said, “but I don’t know the front well enough. Would you teach me?” “We met every Saturday from 8 to noon at a Chick-fil-A in Cypress, and he did nothing but take notes.” Not many coaches have the humility to admit this and instead just go through the motions. It can be an O-line coach who knows nothing about the passing game, a QB guy with low knowledge of pass protections and the run game, or a strength coach who can train the shit out of powerlifting but knows nothing little about speed. You can fake it… Coach also talks the ability of QBs to extend plays—NFL OCs using more college concepts. Cody Alexander

CeeDee Lamb, Tyreek Hill, and Davante Adams: “Don’t go out here just doing releases for the internet.” “It’s different things to where you can like mentally put yourself into the game.” “Just go run routes.” “It’s not about the drill for me.” CeeDee Lamb “It’s not about me having better footwork, it’s about me exercising my right to use my footwork every time I get pressed.” “You gotta oversee the whole picture, see the types of coverages they want to play to stop you; that’s the main thing.” “This game is a lot more mental than what people make it, and that’s what’s given me a lot of an advantage throughout my career.” Davante Adams “Film preparation is important, knowing exactly who you’re going against.” “Every defensive coordinator is different.” Ty Hill

WR coaches and WRs compete vs. the DB coaches and DBs but also pick their brains. Understand the enemy Basic Cover 3 Hybrid Cover 3 Match Cover 3 🚨 Cody’s Substack is a great resource for getting teaching material and understanding the game from the other side’s perspective. Watch the full video! Small clips “All cover 3 defenses have some sort of a quarters toolbox.” “Things that look quarters but there really playing cover 3.” Divider rules: “It’s for the corner—are you aligning inside or outside your WR?” “So what these dividers are really telling is for the corners, hey, we want to funnel everything inside to the post.”
