Batman has barely scratched the surface of that mythology because the Robin part is so fucking weird and inappropriate. It's hard to justify a grown ass man taking a 14-year old boy and turning him into brightly colored partner in tights. Chris Nolan literally hits a wall when he introduces an older Robin, but it still breaks his dead serious algorithm and Nolan quits the franchise. Joel Schumacher, the gayest franchise director that ever lived, couldn't help himself when he finally got to play with the homoeroticism of Batman and Robin and slapped nipples on them. If you can get around the child labor laws and overall bad parenting of Bruce Wayne, there are very interesting stories to be told about that relationship, specifically Jason Todd's death and then resurrection as a villain. But ultimately 1960s Batman probably got it right. Robin is just such a ludicrous character, once engaged, he changes the tone and better to laugh than get weirded out.

I did an edit of the scene for comparison. Just cut out a handful of frames to get that "perfect" explosion without dummy. Scorsese could have easily done this, but you're missing the transition into Saul Bass' Dante's Inferno, the Italian Opera of Puppets. It's a vibe.

Ok let's quadruple down with the actual scene. In the comics the dad is an abusive drunk. This is not that character. He is a controlled military man, completely sober and calculating. The son is not afraid. He is the only son that isn't afraid because he's special (by the power of screenwriters). He's also been through this drill many times before with the bullet holes on the wall at different sizes. When the dad finally shoots the son doesn't flinch. The camera locks and pans with the kid as he walks reinforcing the control he has. He walks up to the dad and they both SMILE. They are bonding over their discipline. The dad looks back as they walk away with a proud of his son look. More importantly as they smile the MUSIC switches to notes of positivity. Which then dissolves to how strong and disciplined he as an adult, earning a positive introduction to a hero. The structure, the camera, the edit, the performance, the music, the dissolve is all a positive memory for him of how he came to be. There is no trauma here. This is a wax on/wax off scene where dad is instilling the super power of discipline. It's the trope of teacher with lessons of tough love. They're stealing from Hanna, Karate Kid, Kill Bill, Yoda, replacing William Tell's arrow with a gun. People today would watch those same movies and argue about mental abuse. You're not coming out of this scene thinking poor abused kid I hope CPS takes the dad and the kid gets therapy and adopted by a white family in Vermont. The purpose of the scene is to instill in the audience that this guy is bad ass, and he's more than worthy of the ring. The narrative point is it's not abuse when the fate of the world is at stake, but a necessity that his dad shouldered. It's not just the Tough Teacher trope, it's also the white HBO screenwriter's Burden of the Black Man trope. Personally I think it's played so seriously it's fucking dumb. Never going to buy a dad shooting an apple over a kid's head as a character building moment. But if you love it, great. Enjoy.

I am not a fan of IMAX. I don't think it does anything. It's just a bigger screen. In a damn box ratio. Blown up television. Give me Cinemascope any day of the week. Just make a big IMAX screen and add the sides. It's only a box because of the limitation of that antiquated film format running through a camera gate that can barely take the stress. Most of that stuff isnt even shot in IMAX but "FOR IMAX." Which is just digital cameras like Venice 2 or Alexa 65. This fluctuating presentation format is also ridiculous. Do we believe that compositions matter? So you're telling me a filmnaker supposedly cares about every little detail about presentation but then doesn't care that vast majority of the movie will be played in theaters in some compromised cropping? I'd rather lock the image in a very specific format and make sure everyone sees it according to my intended compositions with edits calibrated to that eye tracking. The irony is there's nothing more dismissive of cinema than the idea that fluctuating compositions due to format presentation don't matter, whether it's IMAX or iPhone.

There's a huge problem with cinema illiteracy and in this case that of a guy who has been raised on flat LUT looks of the last 15 years. He can only view movies from "realism" and any hyperstylism is viewed as "artificial." Hopefully the next generation has a more open mind.
