Today I questioned the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care on palliative care following a recent report which shows that care is in crisis. Whatever your view on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. I hope everyone agrees it should be safe. I’m concerned he couldn’t guarantee the bills safety or that people wouldn’t be compelled to take the decision to have an early death due to a lack of palliative care provision.

"The level of sexual misconduct we see in the medical workforce is staggering" These are the words of the head of the General Medical Council, the organisation who regulate doctors. Over the past six months I have put a series of FOI requests into medical regulators that have found that only 53 out of nearly 1,000 cases where sexual misconduct has been reported lead to a doctor being suspended or erased (struck off).

Today Parliament passed the Rare Cancers Bill. This will lead to more focus for developing rare cancer drugs. In this job you have the privilege of turning personal grief into real change. I did that today speaking about losing my brother Alex to a rare cancer earlier this year.

I am putting myself forward to be the next MP for Calder Valley. I will be a candidate, and MP, who hits the ground running: 🗳 I have outperformed national Labour Party trends in every election I stood in 🏥 I have made a difference for Calder Valley, leading a campaign that stopped the closure of our A&E department - despite our Tory MP trying to close it 😷 I have achieved change through the council too, making Calderdale the first West Yorkshire authority to commit to paying care workers the living wage 🏢 I know how to get things done as an MP. Working for a food bank campaign, I persuaded MPs in Westminster to get children fed in school holidays.

Today at Prime Minister’s Questions I raised the absurd presumption of parental involvement set out in law which means domestic abusers are free to use child custody battles to continue the abuse of their victims. I have seen in constituency casework that children and victims are being put at risk by this absurd rule, and it must be scrubbed from our statute books.

Today I asked Yvette Cooper about helping police understand experience of victims of violence against women & girls. I commended work done by Alison Lowe OBE connecting police & survivors. I have supported White Ribbon UK for a over decade & will keep speaking out on this issue

Today the Prime Minister spoke for over 2 hours in the House of Commons about the American attack on Iran. While I have no sympathy with the Iranian regime, I do not believe that on and of itself is a reason for militarily intervention. I am glad our prime minister has confirmed that we declined to take part in the action of the US government (something Reform and Conservative MPs said they would have supported). We live in a volatile world and I fear this weekend has made it more so.

I enjoyed being on politics north this morning to talk about the budget and public reactions. I heard people on the doorstep saying they wanted this country to be better. And I’m determined to deliver that. From child poverty to retail and hospitality. #bbcpn

The flood sirens have gone off in the Upper Valley this afternoon due to a combination of heavy rain and snow melt. I have spoken to the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council. Current predictions suggest it is likely to get worse until about 3:30 – 4:00pm and then ease. This is being monitored and I'll update as the day progresses. There is surface water flooding on Halifax Road at Eastwood where a crew are working to unblock drains, surface water flooding at Callis where the road is closed, and a flood warning in Walsden. Other areas including Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden are under flood alerts and teams are out clearing drains. Please avoid travelling to these areas. Residents should put up flood defences if possible. You can get flooding updates on or the Environment Agency website. Flood wardens also update on a number of local Facebook pages including Todmorden Flood Group and Hebden Bridge Flood Action Group. We are at the frontline of climate shocks here in Calder Valley. Rest assured I will continue to raise the issues we face with flooding at the highest levels of government.
