I asked Shakira Austin how the Mystics held Angel Reese to 1/12 from the field: “Seatbelt … She takes a lot of effort to defend, continues to go after the rebound. I think it’s just timing it up. She’s very physical, likes the contact. Kind of the same as trying to guard Bri Jones. They initiate the contact, they like physicality. So sometimes when you seperate and don’t give them that, it kind of messes up their rhythm. And then I’m 6’5, I’m able to do what I do at the rim.”

I asked AJ Dybantsa how he thinks he and Trae Young can find a good balance together as ball-dominant players: “I think we can definitely find a balance. I can play off-ball. Obviously not alot of have people have seen that, but I played off-ball at Prolific Prep, with Tyran Stokes and those guys. With [Team] USA, I’m not the number one option…I have to pave my way. I’m walking in with some vets [on the team], I have to earn my spot.”

I asked Lauren Betts if she has a plan to make sure her body is rested enough going into the season given that she just came off her collegiate season at UCLA: “Yeah, they’re going to take good care of me here. I’ve already talked to all the staff, and they know that I just came off of a long season. Just making sure that I’m taking extra care of my body. Kiki [Iriafen] has done a really good job of making sure that I know that…” On the type of player she envisions herself becoming in the WNBA: “The best version of me.”

I asked Georgia Amoore how her year watching the games while rehabbing last season can help her now: “Last year, I was able to watch Soni, Kira, Kiki, and Lucy. Their movements, when they like to cut, when they like to shoot open shots, and that’s something I take pride in. Paying that same level of attention to detail during camp. I know what I can get with three-point shot making or pass-dribbling, but just learning my new teammates’ movements and what they like. My job is literally to put them in the best position to succeed. I’m not trying to do too much else. If I cam make you look good and learn what you’re really good at, I take pride in that. We have two weeks now of camp to figure that out…”
