It is scary listening and watching this… “Weld from here to here…” “The bolts…Go to the market and buy the one you can find…I will give you money..” “We will put CCTV…down load it to your phone…” You would think that this federal minister is talking about repairing his house gate!!! The old River Niger bridge is a steel-truss road bridge that was completed in 1965. Just like the failed Benin-Agbor- Warri road…it is the major artery connecting east and west of the country- the only one until the recent completion of the 2nd Niger bridge. It has seen years of service, wear and tear from daily use and now vandalism, have taken their toll… That bridge is overdue for a comprehensive managed maintenance program of work. At the very minimum a battery of nondestructive tests to determine current structural integrity and how much its load bearing capacity has been compromised is what is required…in the first instance… But professor of project is here saying “weld from here to here…” “go to the market and buy bolt…” How ??? Which bolt? Just any bolt will do ??? No consideration for tensile strength and load factor ??? Weld what??? With what??? Have you rated and tested the plates to see their actual condition ??? So… I watched the voices-from-the-bunker video where President Bola Tinubu recently told the Catholic Bishops’ Conference that “life is improving…” and “there has always been hunger in Nigeria…” I have a few….thoughts… I wish I could say it was nice to hear from Oga at the top…but the truth is that he wasn’t talking to me….he was talking to the people he was with…so this is me eavesdropping… With that said…even if and Oresidnet is keeping malice with me as a Nigerian and won’t talk to me …I have a few things to tell him because I fear he truly is living in a bubble and doesn’t seem to understand the state of the country so let me weigh in… This is an open message to The Presidency. 🧵1/2 Truth is that the standard of living is not measured by presidential claims or assurances. It is measured by what people earn… what their money can buy… whether they can feed their families… and whether they have anything left after meeting their basic needs. That is the gold the standard for measuring standard of living or quality of life… On those measures, the evidence does not support the President’s claim. According to the International Monetary Fund, poverty in Nigeria has reached 63% of the population. That means approximately six out of every ten Nigerians are estimated to be living below the national poverty line. In the IMF 2026 Article IV Consultation for Nigeria dated 9 June 2026, The IMF says conditions remain difficult for many Nigerians and warns that poverty and food insecurity could worsen. The same IMF report (IMF 2026 Article IV Consultation) estimates that 27 million Nigerians experienced food insecurity in late 2025. The United Nations World Food Programme in a January 22,2026 projected that nearly 35 million Nigerians would experience acute and severe food insecurity in 2026. It describes this as Nigeria’s worst recorded hunger level in a decade. How can the standard of living be improving when tens of millions of citizens cannot reliably obtain enough food? Closer to home, the country’s own National Bureau of Statistics reports (NBS Cost of a Healthy Diet Report, March 2026) that the minimum cost of a healthy diet reached ₦1,541 per adult per day in March 2026. This is the cheapest combination of available foods that meets basic nutritional guidelines. It does not include transportation, cooking fuel or food preparation or Medicare costs…people are going through it Mr President sir !! At ₦1,541 per day, one adult requires approximately ₦46,230 every month for the cheapest healthy diet alone. That consumes about 66% of Nigeria’s ₦70,000 minimum wage, before rent, transport, electricity, healthcare, school fees or the cost of feeding a single child is considered. I should mention that according to a The Guardian newspaper report, the cost of that healthy diet has risen from ₦703 per adult per day in October 2023 to ₦1,541 in March 2026, an increase of approximately 119%. Life has gotten objectively worse for Nigerians under this administration!!! Transportation and energy costs tell a similar story. The NBS also recorded an average petrol price of ₦238.11 per litre in May 2023. Its current dashboard reports an average of ₦1,596.25 per litre. That is approximately 6.7 times the May 2023 price, that has knock on consequences for transportation, food distribution, generators and the operating costs of small businesses. This is not improvement. It’s gotten worse!!! Let’s leave that alone for a minute….the Employment figures do not validate the President’s claim either. The NBS reports that 93% of Nigerian employment is informal, while 85.6% of employed Nigerians are self-employed. These numbers include millions surviving through unstable trading, irregular work and low-productivity micro-enterprises without pensions, insurance or dependable monthly wages. I suspect thats the category being encouraged into the Akara and Kulikuli ministry? Niiiiceee…1/2
