500 Jews and allies took over the Statue of Liberty in a sit-in to demand President Donald J. Trump call for a ceasefire in Gaza. After shutting down Grand Central Station, we took over the Statue of Liberty — because we won't be silent while the Israeli military wages a genocidal war in our name!

Last week, we were able to chip at the Western media’s wall of silence that surrounds Palestinians sharing their experiences and calling for their liberation. The cracks in the narrative are showing —we must keep pushing, until Palestinians are FREE. CEASEFIRE NOW!

“The genocide we are witnessing today, is something that I recognize from my own experience as a Holocaust survivor… What is happening today in Gaza is an extreme form of repeat genocide, a holocaust in our own time, in front of our eyes.” — Stephen Kapos

Yesterday, JVP members and over 300 New Yorkers staged a sit-in at the offices of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, demanding they vote to block the sale of U.S. weapons to the Israeli military. There were simply too many of us — Iranian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Jewish, and U.S. military veterans — to let their business continue as usual. Our action shut down traffic in Midtown Manhattan for over an hour. Let all Congress be on notice: fund people, not bombs.

“At the end of the war, people said ‘Never Again’. For a lot of us, it was ‘Never Again’ for anyone, not just Jews… We in the United States have supported this [war] all along. We have the power to end it… to stop arming Israel.” On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Irena Klepfisz, poet, writer, lesbian activist, JVP member and child survivor of the Holocaust, describes the life-long impact the Holocaust had on her. “When I see Palestinian children,” she explains, “I am acutely aware of the damage that’s being done to them.” Collectively, we determine what the legacy of Holocaust memory will be. We can weaponize our pain and inscribe the names of our ancestors on the funding bills and bombs that are aimed at Palestinians. Or, we can carry our ancestors’ memories into actions that unite and protect us all. We at JVP choose the latter. We won’t stop until Palestinians can return to their homes and the Israeli government halts its genocidal attacks on Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. “[Palestinians] deserve a life where they can feel safe,” Irena says, “where they can have hope, where they can look forward to a future very concretely, where they can dream and imagine a future.” May it be so. The student movement for a liberated Palestine isn’t going anywhere! And as they stand with their Palestinian peers, Jewish students are bravely demonstrating that their Judaism is inseparable from their in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We stand with them. To honor the Jewish festival of Sukkot, hundreds of JVP students and other Jewish student groups across the country erected Gaza Solidarity Sukkahs on their campuses. Inside the beautifully decorated, hand-made Sukkahs, Jewish students gathered in prayer and protest as the Israeli government continues to invoke Judaism to fuel its genocide.🧵
