During the debate, Alex Sorin, JD claimed that because Nestorius showed up to the council and was treated as a bishop, this somehow proves that the council disregarded Rome’s authority and its prior decision. What Alex seems to be ignorant of is that before the council even convened, St. Cyril wrote to Pope St. Celestine asking a very precise question: whether Nestorius should be admitted to the council at all, or whether the sentence that had already been passed by Rome was now in force. Pope St. Celestine responded by stating that Nestorius would be given time to repent, since everyone deserves the opportunity to do so. (Citation in the Picture) This demonstrates two very important points: 1. Cyril clearly believed that Rome’s decree was already definitive. Otherwise, there would have been no reason to ask whether the sentence was in force in the first place. 2. The council did not disregard Rome’s authority. On the contrary, it acted in accordance with Rome’s decision by allowing Nestorius to appear as a bishop solely so that he might have the chance to repent. So Nestorius’ presence at the council does not undermine Roman authority at all. It actually presupposes it. Elijah Yasi
