The Soviet Union's defeat in Afghanistan At the end of December 1979, the Soviet Union sent 100 thousand of troops into Afghanistan and immediately assumed complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the country. The Ulama(scholars) of Afghanistan issued a Fatwa calling for Jihad against the Soviets, sparking immediate resistance. Both young and old Afghans made unprecedented sacrifices during the nearly decade-long war. during the nearly decade-long war, the conflict resulted in over 14,450 Russian soldiers killed, approximately 49,983 wounded, and around 330 missing. Tragically, over 1.5 million Afghans lost their lives, 2 million were left disabled, and up to 10 million went as refugees to other countries. Ultimately, the Soviet Union was defeated and withdrew all its forces from Afghanistan on February 15, 1989.

Durand Line: Neither Recognized by the Afghan Government Nor by Baloch and Pashtun Nations The Durand Line is a border that has never been accepted by the Afghan government, nor by the Baloch and Pashtun nations living on both sides of it. It was drawn by British colonial rulers in 1893 to serve their strategic interests. It was part of a 100-year agreement, which officially expired in 1993. Today, the people of Balochistan are engaged in a struggle for independence and consider this border a forced and artificial line, imposed to divide their historical, cultural, and national unity.
