He was arrested under Pakistan’s anti-Ahmadi laws—at the behest of religious extremists—for the “crime” of offering Friday prayers. He was ill. Authorities denied him access to his medications. He died in custody on the sixth day of his imprisonment. Some of us often wonder how cruel the persecutors of early Muslims in Mecca must have been—targeting them for simply praying or reading the Quran. But we don’t need to imagine.
