I haven’t even really processed this fully, but a week ago my friend Fr. Patrick Mary Briscoe, OP texted me (as I was complaining about the timing of Francis’s death and the conclave) “It’s probably the last thing you want to hear, but I’m your friend and I love you, so I’ll tell you: It’s the timing God wants.” And it was. And is. And I had to be smacked upside the head to see it. On this day, May 8, 2017, I was unjustly fired from my teaching job at a Catholic high school. 8 years later, I was live on CNN when we saw white smoke billowing out of the Sistine Chapel chimney signaling to us that the cardinal electors had chosen a Pope, the first American, no less. "I think what I would like everyone to know is that he (Pope Francis) is at heart & in his whole being, he is still our Holy Father, and I think he would prefer us not to focus on the medical reports, but rather to join him in praying for the Church and for all the situations of human suffering and violence and misery, which the Gospel and our Lord, sends us out there to try and be close to those who need us.
