Rome packs more wonder into a day than most cities manage in a week. We started at the Colosseum, a 2,000-year-old arena where rock-star gladiators once battled wild animals - and each other - to the roar of 50,000 Romans. It’s vast, dramatic, and eerily powerful. Built in just eight years, it’s been a city landmark ever since, lending its walls to shopping alleys, homes, and even shelter for fearful emperors. After a quick lunch and some much-needed respite from the 35-degree heat, we headed across the Tiber into the world’s tiniest country: Vatican City. Top tip: book tickets in advance. We used GetYourGuide and skipped the queue. Inside the Vatican Museums, we wandered through what seemed like miles of marble and gold. I walked into a wall more than once while craning to admire the ceilings. Then, in the courtyard, we stumbled across a cracked golden globe. It’s called Sphere within a Sphere by Arnaldo Pomodoro. Part sci-fi, part spiritual metaphor, and completely mesmerising. And just when you think you’ve seen it all there’s the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo’s ceiling is breathtaking. The Creation of Adam is the headline act, but The Last Judgment behind the altar is equally powerful. Strictly no photos allowed so grab a seat, look up, and take it all in. Love, Rome.

Hippo showdown on the Sand River. We were looking for a beautiful sundowner spot when these two guys were up for a fight. It could have been very unpleasant but the smaller one decided discretion was the better part of valour and sauntered back into the bush. Look at the big guy’s swagger as he heads back into the water 🦛 …and the leopard cub, being a leopard cub!

Just organising another trip to Japan. These photographs are from my previous visit in the summer of 2019. Who knew that within a few months the world would be shut down and international travel a pipe dream for months and months! I had been lucky enough to visit Osaka and the picture perfect Kyoto - home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Did you know that Kyoto was on the original list of WWII potential atomic bomb targets because of its industrial and symbolic importance. Secretary of War Henry Stimson argued forcefully that Japan would never forgive the US if they targeted the ancient capital. His perseverance prevailed and Roosevelt eventually acquiesced. Kokura was chosen as a replacement but bad weather and cloud cover saw Nagasaki hit instead. Kyoto remains a must visit location for any visitor. Can you perhaps recommend where else I should add to my list?
