As a doctor, I am horrified by what I saw at the Whipple detention facility in Minneapolis. No medical protocols. No real medical care. No nurse on site when I visited. No beds. No real blankets. Extremely cold temperatures. Minimal food. These conditions are inhumane and unacceptable.

Worms in food. Medical crises. Measles outbreaks. Malnutrition. Several deaths, including one ruled a homicide, in the last few months alone. The reports out of the nation’s largest detention facility are horrifying. Thousands of Minnesotans have been sent to Camp East Montana, so I went to conduct oversight and visit my constituents being held there. ICE didn’t allow me to see or speak to any of them.

🚨🚨🚨 We just learned that the House is going to be voting TOMORROW on H.J.Res 140: the single largest threat posed to the Boundary Waters to date. This bill would *permanently* open the Boundary Waters up to mining, and prevent all future administrations from protecting these public lands. This would pave the way for sulfide-ore copper mining in the region -- the most toxic industry in America -- which has never been allowed in Minnesota before. It would cause irreversible damange to the most visited wilderness area in the country. And this would be a massive sell-out to foreign interests over the American people. This would give mining rights to Trump's Chilean-based mining company billionaire buddies, who will extract our resources, pollute our air, land, and water, permanently damage our pristine Boundary Waters, and leave Minnesotans to foot the bill for the clean up. I'm urging all of my colleagues to vote NO. We need to get loud and stop this legislation.

When Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed in an act of political violence, the gunman also took the life of their beloved dog Gilbert. Their son Colin shared with me that after an earlier threat was made on his mother’s life she decided to get a dog. Gilbert was a golden retriever who Melissa planned to keep until he finished his service dog training. It turned out that Gilbert was too friendly to be a traditional service dog, but would go on to be of great service to the Hortman family. Melissa and Mark loved Gilbert and Gilbert loved them back. And we miss them all every day.

As a doctor, I found it especially unconscionable that Secretary Noem’s ICE agents refused to allow a physician to provide immediate, potentially lifesaving care to Renee Good and hindering emergency responders from reaching her. Where is the humanity? How could you possibly claim this is about protecting the safety of Americans?

The President of the United States is supposed to try and make life better for everyone. Not attack people based on where they live or who they voted for. Not fuel the flames of hatred and division. Not do everything they can to pit everyone against each other. What's happening right now isn't normal.

Minnesotans have made clear: they don’t want mining in the Boundary Waters. But instead of bolstering its protections, today House leadership is forcing a rushed vote to permanently strip the Boundary Waters of its federal protections and open it up to toxic copper sulfide mining – the most toxic industry in America, which has never been done in Minnesota. The Boundary Waters is the most visited wilderness area in the country and the crown jewel of our state. This bill is a betrayal of Minnesotans and the American people, and a sell-out to Trump’s foreign billionaire buddies, who would extract our resources, permanently pollute our clean air and water, and leave us to foot the bill. We must protect our precious, pristine Boundary Waters and keep our public lands where they belong: with the American people. NOT foreign billionaire mining conglomerates. This morning, I voted NO on the Republican budget that is the single largest transfer of wealth from working class people to the ultra-wealthy, and rips away health care from 14 million Americans. All done behind closed doors, in the dark of the night, with zero transparency for the American people -- we're going to continue to call out exactly what's in this bill so it gets stopped in the Senate.
