Only 5 African presidents, just 4 from the 16-member #SADC, showed up at Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema’s second term inauguration at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. The presidents attending include Kenya's President William Ruto, Duma Boko of Botswana, Namibia's Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe. Lesotho was represented by its prime minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane. President Hichilema, who is calling for a “Zambia for all” in his inaugural address, begins his second term as his most prominent political rival, Brian Mundubile has been charged with treason, along with his running mate, Makebi Zulu. Both remain detained in a maximum security facility.

Zambian government of President Hakainde #Hichilema has now arrested and detained his main political rival and opposition leader, Brian #Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, as authorities intend to charge them with an “alleged offence of treason.” Police, who grilled them for the entire day, have not publicly detailed the conduct they allege constitutes treason, nor have they disclosed what evidence prompted the investigation. Mundubile failed to file a presidential election petition challenging President Hichilema’s victory following the state’s unprecedented order to shut down courts across the country for “security reasons.” The courts are now fully operational. Mundubile, who has been living under diplomatic sanctuary, challenged President Hichilema in the just-concluded presidential election. Hichilema has since been declared the winner and will be sworn in Tuesday next week. Treason charges are frequently a focal point of political friction in Zambia, often brought up against high-profile opposition leaders. Prior to becoming President, Hichilema was detained and charged with treason following a political standoff involving his failure to yield to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade. At the time, he was the leader of Zambia’s main opposition, challenging President Lungu. He spent more than 100 days in a high-security prison while awaiting trial. It took the intervention of Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, who traveled to Zambia to meet Lungu and Hichilema, for the state to drop all treason charges. Three years later, Hichilema won the 2021 presidential election and became the President of Zambia.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s Tanzanian government trails, arrests and hands over a Congolese journalist and blogger who has been an outspoken critic of President Félix Tshisekedi’s government, according to Congolese authorities. Denise Dusauchoy, a prominent journalist and online personality who has built a substantial following on social media, was arrested in Tanzania on Sunday, Aug. 30, in Kabanga, in the country’s western region. She was subsequently extradited to #DRC, where she is expected to face criminal charges. Dusauchoy has emerged as a significant and often controversial voice in Congolese political discourse. Through her online platforms, she has been sharply critical of President Tshisekedi, his administration and senior figures associated with his government over the constitutional revisions. DRC has thanked Tanzanian authorities for what they described as its cooperation and collaboration in locating, arresting and transferring Dusauchoy to the Democratic Republic of Congo. This song is roughly translated as: “There will be no third term, Fatshi. Go away, we’re fed up with you.” President Félix Tshisekedi has paved the way to potentially seek a third term through a highly controversial constitutional reform process that's currently underway.

74 days later, President Paul #Biya, 93, has finally returned to #Cameroon from Geneva, Switzerland. This is the longest recorded stay away from home for the world’s oldest president, who has been in power since 1982. Biya’s chartered flight touched down at Nsimalen International Airport in Yaoundé at 15:40 GMT and was immediately whisked away in a presidential convoy. He waved to his supporters from inside his tinted vehicle. He left Cameroon on June 7 for what the government described as “a brief private stay in Europe”. Biya's health has been long source of concern in Cameroon. His prolonged absence from the country, limited public appearances and the lack of clear information about his condition fuelled renewed speculation about his wellbeing and ability to continue carrying out the demands of the presidency.

Cameroon's🇨🇲 President Paul #Biya, 93, now free to handpick his constitutional successor, in case of his death, resignation or incapacity, after parliament voted overwhelmingly Saturday to approve a constitutional amendment to reintroduce the position of vice president. In a joint session of the ruling party-dominated National Assembly and Senate, lawmakers voted 200 to 18 in favour, with four abstentions, to pass the bill. The bill stipulates that the vice president will automatically assume the presidency if President Paul Biya dies, resigns, or becomes incapacitated. Only four African presidents show up for the swearing-in ceremony of Tanzania's🇹🇿 President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which has taken place at a military base in the administrative capital, Dodoma. Samia claims that the deadly protests across the country were set off by people from outside, not Tanzanians. Attendance for the general public had been restricted. Internet connectivity cut. Presidents from neighboring countries Kenya, Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda all skipped the event. OFFICIAL! Ousmane Sonko has been overwhelmingly elected President of National Assembly of #Senegal, strengthening his political influence and setting up a direct institutional rivalry with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, secured the position after lawmakers convened in a plenary session on Tuesday morning to reinstate him as a member of parliament and elect a new Speaker of the National Assembly. His predecessor, El Malick Ndiaye, a close ally of Sonko, resigned from the role on Sunday, paving way for Sonko’s election. President Faye had reportedly moved swiftly to the Constitutional Court in an attempt to block Sonko’s return to the helm of the National Assembly. This expected to further complicate reform efforts by President Faye, who dismissed Sonko as prime minister on Friday following months of growing tensions between the two leaders. 🇸🇳Ousmane Sonko: “There will be no system of hyper-presidentialism in Senegal today.” Senegal’s parliament erupted in celebration and dance as Ousmane Sonko took his seat as the new President of the National Assembly, amid escalating tensions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. “What is at stake is the relationship between morality and politics,” Sonko declared. “The National Assembly will use all its levers of power firmly but responsibly moving forward,” Sonko warns in his first address, as he officially becomes Senegal’s second-highest state authority. I think #Nairobi is exactly what it says it is; one of the world’s great diplomatic capitals. Not every African city can host a summit of this magnitude without a single head of state sleeping in a neighbouring country. It is not always about nice speeches and red carpets. Meetings of this nature come with enormous diplomatic, logistical and security complexities. It is always about secure state movement, intelligence coordination, airspace management, accommodation capacity, transport systems, the highest standards of diplomatic protocol, emergency response and ensuring an entire city continues to function while the world’s most protected and influential leaders are in town. With heads of state, global financiers, diplomats, policymakers and development partners gathered in Nairobi, the Africa Forward Summit 2026 was going to be a big, big test for #Kenya.
