When Daddy and Mum visited South Africa in 1966, they purposely flew over Robben Island at a low altitude and asked the pilot to wave his wings, knowing that Nelson Mandela and his band of brothers were below. Daddy never had the chance to meet Mandela because Mandela was imprisoned at the time. But decades later, when I stood in Cape Town for Mandela’s inauguration, Mandela told me that Daddy's visit to the University of Cape Town, where he gave his iconic "Ripple of Hope" speech, meant a great deal to the Anti-Apartheid Movement. In 1996, Mum returned to South Africa to commemorate the 30th anniversary of that historic trip, visiting university campuses, community organizations in Soweto and Crossroads, talking to business leaders, union officials, artists, members of the Mandela administration, Bishop Tutu and other faith leaders, and as many locals as she could reach. Then a call came from Mandela’s office inviting Mum to Johannesburg for an impromptu breakfast at his home. She always spoke of that morning with deep affection and admiration for Mandela’s resilience: a man once imprisoned, now South Africa’s first Black president. That's the video you're watching. On Nelson Mandela Day, I'm reflecting on Mandela’s extraordinary legacy and the courage and hope that continue to inspire people around the world to this day.

Fifty seven years ago today, my father announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. “I cannot stand aside from the contest that will decide our nation’s future and our children’s future,” Daddy said. I imagine he would be devastated and angry about what we are facing today. Issues and causes he fought hard for are being obliterated from the national lexicon. The protection of civic space, programs that strengthen society, and the rule of law, which he held sacred, are all on the chopping block. This I know: He would take action. Let’s pause to remember the core values our nation was founded on 250 years ago: due process, the rule of law, and the freedom of speech. Today, these very principles are under fire. It’s easy to think that constitutional violations only happen to others, but when one group's rights are compromised, everyone's freedom is at stake. We’re here in San Salvador, El Salvador, where at least 288 people have been kidnapped off the streets of the United States and flown to a foreign country, and are now being held in detention centers and prisons. These are some of the most notorious detention centers and prisons in the world, known for torture. I will be sharing updates from our trip here and on @RFKHumanRights’ channel.

Fifty-seven years ago today—just one day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated—Daddy spoke of “the mindless menace of violence in America, which again stains our land and every one of our lives.” Not just the violence of bullets, but the violence of indifference, inaction, and institutional decay—a violence that still thrives today. Today, I see it in the arrest of student protesters. In journalists vilified as “enemies of the people.” In asylum seekers brutalized in detention. In workers exploited, families torn apart, and the emboldening of white supremacy at the highest levels. My father sought to heal the wounds left by violence. And today, at @RFKHumanRights, we carry that mission forward—fighting for justice, holding institutions accountable, and standing with those who dare to speak truth to power. Yesterday, we traveled to one of the main detention centers in Mariona, El Salvador, but unsurprisingly, access was denied. A prison guard confirmed that nobody has been allowed to enter any of the detention centers, not even family members. They also confirmed that detainees are not allowed to make sporadic phone calls to their family members. We also met with victims of human rights abuses, including several men who were detained for over a year under the exception regime, and who still have other family members inside the prisons. They were fishermen, peasants, ordinary and hardworking individuals who were taken by the police and thrown in prison without any proper hearings, access to their lawyers or their families, and who shared with us the torture and inhumane conditions they suffered and witnessed in the different detention centers they were held in. While we formally requested access to CECOT, where ten of our Venezuelan clients are detained, and to the Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia is detained, the Salvadorian authorities have not responded to our requests.
