When Daddy and Mum visited South Africa in 1966, they purposely flew over Robben Island at a low altitude and asked the pilot to wave his wings, knowing that Nelson Mandela and his band of brothers were below. Daddy never had the chance to meet Mandela because Mandela was imprisoned at the time. But decades later, when I stood in Cape Town for Mandela’s inauguration, Mandela told me that Daddy's visit to the University of Cape Town, where he gave his iconic "Ripple of Hope" speech, meant a great deal to the Anti-Apartheid Movement. In 1996, Mum returned to South Africa to commemorate the 30th anniversary of that historic trip, visiting university campuses, community organizations in Soweto and Crossroads, talking to business leaders, union officials, artists, members of the Mandela administration, Bishop Tutu and other faith leaders, and as many locals as she could reach. Then a call came from Mandela’s office inviting Mum to Johannesburg for an impromptu breakfast at his home. She always spoke of that morning with deep affection and admiration for Mandela’s resilience: a man once imprisoned, now South Africa’s first Black president. That's the video you're watching. On Nelson Mandela Day, I'm reflecting on Mandela’s extraordinary legacy and the courage and hope that continue to inspire people around the world to this day.

Fifty seven years ago today, my father announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. “I cannot stand aside from the contest that will decide our nation’s future and our children’s future,” Daddy said. I imagine he would be devastated and angry about what we are facing today. Issues and causes he fought hard for are being obliterated from the national lexicon. The protection of civic space, programs that strengthen society, and the rule of law, which he held sacred, are all on the chopping block. This I know: He would take action. And he would implore us all to do the same. At @RFKHumanRights, we cannot stand aside. And we will not back down. But we need your help. Every donation helps fuel the fight my father dedicated his life to—defending human rights, protecting democracy, and ensuring justice for all. Stand with us ➡️

Thank you Ed O'Keefe and CBS News for having me. This would be like demolishing the Washington Monument because it didn’t say the Trump-Washington Monument. Or demolishing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier because it didn’t say the Trump-Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There’s a more dignified, a more American way forward.

Today is my mom's 96th birthday! To celebrate her, please listen to this great song that Taylor Swift wrote about my parents! 💐 My mother founded @RFKHumanRights in the fall of 1969 to carry forth my father’s legacy. For more than half a century, my mom has been a champion for justice, standing with human rights defenders around the globe. Her courage and dedication to #HumanRights motivate our team every day, inspiring us to hold governments accountable, promote human rights education and #YouthOrganizing, advance #dignity and #equality in workplaces and investment communities, and uplift grassroots changemakers. Happy birthday to the greatest mom I could ever imagine! 🎂❤️

My father's words continue to ring true nearly 60 years later. This Independence Day, we haven't forgotten about the freedoms behind the fireworks. Let’s pause to remember the core values our nation was founded on 250 years ago: due process, the rule of law, and the freedom of speech. Today, these very principles are under fire. It’s easy to think that constitutional violations only happen to others, but when one group's rights are compromised, everyone's freedom is at stake. The liberties this holiday commemorates deserve more than just one night of celebration, they deserve our active protection. Stand with us this Independence Day, every gift keeps the fight going:

We’re here in San Salvador, El Salvador, where at least 288 people have been kidnapped off the streets of the United States and flown to a foreign country, and are now being held in detention centers and prisons. These are some of the most notorious detention centers and prisons in the world, known for torture. I will be sharing updates from our trip here and on @RFKHumanRights’ channel.

John Lewis was my hero, my mentor, my friend. He took the time to speak to my children, nieces, and nephews about Daddy not as a figure in a history book, but as his friend. He made history feel human. He made justice feel possible. And he helped our country live our values. Happy Heavenly Birthday, John.

Fifty-seven years ago today—just one day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated—Daddy spoke of “the mindless menace of violence in America, which again stains our land and every one of our lives.” Not just the violence of bullets, but the violence of indifference, inaction, and institutional decay—a violence that still thrives today. Today, I see it in the arrest of student protesters. In journalists vilified as “enemies of the people.” In asylum seekers brutalized in detention. In workers exploited, families torn apart, and the emboldening of white supremacy at the highest levels. My father sought to heal the wounds left by violence. And today, at @RFKHumanRights, we carry that mission forward—fighting for justice, holding institutions accountable, and standing with those who dare to speak truth to power. We cannot afford to be indifferent. Will you stand with us? Support our work 💌➡️

I’ve been working on human rights issues for 45 years, and all around the world, the first target of autocrats is always free speech. That’s what’s happening in our country right now, and it’s the most dangerous thing that can happen in a democracy. This is why we’re proud to honor Stephen Colbert at our Gala this December. Thank you Erin Burnett OutFront for having me on last night!

No one has done more for people living in #poverty than Muhammad Yunus (Muhammad Yunus). He is the superhero of the world. And he has empowered more women than any other person in history. Today, his government in #Bangladesh has brought him up on false charges, and is trying to stop his extraordinary work. I hope you’ll help us put an end to this travesty of justice, and stand with Muhammad Yunus. #IStandWithYunus

Yesterday, we traveled to one of the main detention centers in Mariona, El Salvador, but unsurprisingly, access was denied. A prison guard confirmed that nobody has been allowed to enter any of the detention centers, not even family members. They also confirmed that detainees are not allowed to make sporadic phone calls to their family members. We also met with victims of human rights abuses, including several men who were detained for over a year under the exception regime, and who still have other family members inside the prisons. They were fishermen, peasants, ordinary and hardworking individuals who were taken by the police and thrown in prison without any proper hearings, access to their lawyers or their families, and who shared with us the torture and inhumane conditions they suffered and witnessed in the different detention centers they were held in. While we formally requested access to CECOT, where ten of our Venezuelan clients are detained, and to the Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia is detained, the Salvadorian authorities have not responded to our requests.

We’re in El Salvador meeting with local civil society organizations. In this video, Noah Bullock, Executive Director of Cristosal, unpacks the current situation in-country, including the government’s suppression of free press, violations of due process, and the ongoing state of exception. We’ve also submitted requests to meet with President Bukele and to access CECOT, as well as Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, though we anticipate that these requests may be denied. More updates to come.

The new anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed by Parliament today in Uganda continues to pose a grave risk to LGBTQ+ people in the country. I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda + demand that Yoweri K Museveni veto this bill immediately. Frank Mugisha #SayNoToAHB23

On his first day in office, Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at rolling back federal programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as policies protecting the rights of the transgender community in the U.S. One of the key provisions of the executive order directed government agencies to revise forms and policies, narrowing gender categories, and effectively eliminating recognition of non-binary and transgender identities. The executive order also mandated an immediate halt to DEI training and recruitment initiatives within the federal workforce. These programs, which aimed to address discrimination and foster inclusive environments, were categorized by the Trump administration as promoting "divisive" ideologies. The order further instructed agencies to eliminate what it described as "discriminatory programs," which included affirmative action policies, diversity initiatives, and certain racial equity projects. This is not just a policy shift; it is a direct attack on our human rights. At @RFKHumanRights, we remain steadfast in our commitment to defending the rights of all individuals. We will not back down in our fight against these damaging actions, and we will continue to ensure that every person, regardless of their identity, is treated with the dignity, equality, and respect they deserve.
