Fifty seven years ago today, my father announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. “I cannot stand aside from the contest that will decide our nation’s future and our children’s future,” Daddy said. I imagine he would be devastated and angry about what we are facing today. Issues and causes he fought hard for are being obliterated from the national lexicon. The protection of civic space, programs that strengthen society, and the rule of law, which he held sacred, are all on the chopping block. This I know: He would take action. And he would implore us all to do the same. At @RFKHumanRights, we cannot stand aside. And we will not back down. But we need your help. Today is my mom's 96th birthday! To celebrate her, please listen to this great song that Taylor Swift wrote about my parents! 💐 My mother founded @RFKHumanRights in the fall of 1969 to carry forth my father’s legacy. For more than half a century, my mom has been a champion for justice, standing with human rights defenders around the globe. John Lewis was my hero, my mentor, my friend. He took the time to speak to my children, nieces, and nephews about Daddy not as a figure in a history book, but as his friend. We’re here in San Salvador, El Salvador, where at least 288 people have been kidnapped off the streets of the United States and flown to a foreign country, and are now being held in detention centers and prisons. These are some of the most notorious detention centers and prisons in the world, known for torture. I will be sharing updates from our trip here and on @RFKHumanRights’ channel.

Today, I see it in the arrest of student protesters. In journalists vilified as “enemies of the people.” In asylum seekers brutalized in detention. In workers exploited, families torn apart, and the emboldening of white supremacy at the highest levels. My father sought to heal the wounds left by violence. Yesterday, we traveled to one of the main detention centers in Mariona, El Salvador, but unsurprisingly, access was denied. A prison guard confirmed that nobody has been allowed to enter any of the detention centers, not even family members. They also confirmed that detainees are not allowed to make sporadic phone calls to their family members. We also met with victims of human rights abuses, including several men who were detained for over a year under the exception regime, and who still have other family members inside the prisons. They were fishermen, peasants, ordinary and hardworking individuals who were taken by the police and thrown in prison without any proper hearings, access to their lawyers or their families, and who shared with us the torture and inhumane conditions they suffered and witnessed in the different detention centers they were held in. While we formally requested access to CECOT, where ten of our Venezuelan clients are detained, and to the Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, where Kilmar Abrego Garcia is detained, the Salvadorian authorities have not responded to our requests.

We’re in El Salvador meeting with local civil society organizations. In this video, Noah Bullock, Executive Director of Cristosal, unpacks the current situation in-country, including the government’s suppression of free press, violations of due process, and the ongoing state of exception. We’ve also submitted requests to meet with President Bukele and to access CECOT, as well as Centro Industrial Penitenciario in Santa Ana, though we anticipate that these requests may be denied. More updates to come.
