Easy Red, Omaha Beach. Mid-tide - add another 100 yards of beach, and you'll have the distance the 16th Inf. crossed under machinegunfire 'like rain', with 70-pound packs, and wet uniforms. The exit in the dunes at the end of the video is where the first Americans broke out.

The bloody Germans coming at us.... The greatest sermon in British military history. Bleeding from his wounds, Major Dick Lonsdale climbs into the pulpit of the Old Church in Oosterbeek to rally survivors: “You know as well as I do there are a lot of bloody Germans coming at us. Well, all we can do is to stay here and hang on in the hope that somebody catches us up. We must fight for our lives and stick together. We've fought the Germans before - in North Africa, Sicily, Italy. They weren't good enough for us then, and they're bloody well not good enough for us now. They're up against the finest soldiers in the world. An hour from now you will take up defensive positions north of the road outside. Make certain you dig in well and that your weapons and ammo are in good order. We are getting short of ammo, so when you shoot you shoot to kill. Good luck to you all.” The mission at Arnhem flips from an offensive to a desperate last stand. #MarketGardenLive (15/21) Here's the bullet holed bible in the church.

THE MEAT GRINDER. The US Army enters the Hürtgen Forest today. Omar Bradley and Hodges' meat grinder, where the top brass shows it is just as wasteful and incompetent as during WWI. Two regiments fight for five days to advance just one mile to the first clearing in the forest. The 9th Infantry Division then takes 10 days to push another mile. This two-mile advance costs almost 5,000 casualties. Below is Hill 400, the site of some of the battle's worst combat.

The calm before the storm. Pointe du Hoc. The most dangerous mission on D-Day, according to Omar Bradley. 225 men will fight here late tonight, US time. 77 will be killed, and more than 140 will be wounded.

Streetfighting....You're not supposed to bunch. You're supposed to keep your head up and keep moving. If you're in your first big urban battle in Germany, in Aachen today in 1944, and carrying a mortar base or machine gun....it's one hell of an obstacle course...

Officers of the 116th Infantry Regiment have been given their objectives on D Day. A Company's commanding officer, Bedford Boy Taylor Fellers, is certain tonight that he is on a suicide mission, believing he and his men will be slaughtered. He is right. This is where he and 1006 men will be killed, wounded, or missing in action from his regiment.
