THE MEAT GRINDER. The US Army enters the Hürtgen Forest today. Omar Bradley and Hodges' meat grinder, where the top brass shows it is just as wasteful and incompetent as during WWI. Two regiments fight for five days to advance just one mile to the first clearing in the forest. The 9th Infantry Division then takes 10 days to push another mile. This two-mile advance costs almost 5,000 casualties. Below is Hill 400, the site of some of the battle's worst combat.
