The genius behind SNL’s “Election Night” sketch In November 2016, SNL turned one of America’s most shocking election nights into a comedy sketch that was far more insightful than a collection of political jokes. But the story behind how it was written makes it even more fascinating.

SNL took a commercial for a real psoriasis medication and turned it into a story about a mysterious force that may have existed before humanity. Ryan Gosling, Sarah Sherman and Ashley Padilla helped turn “Otezla” into one of those sketches that gets more ridiculous the longer you watch. Here’s how it works.

Jokes about women, written by men who actually like and love women, just hit so differently.

Will Ferrell returned to Saturday Night Live for the Season 51 finale. But the funniest part of his monologue? The person who walked out to deliver it wasn’t Will Ferrell. It was Chad Smith, the drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And that was only the beginning.

SNL’s “Trump Has a Few Things to Address” starts with something millions of people understand: the shock of seeing how much it costs to fill up a car. Then Trump walks into the scene, and an ordinary family’s problem becomes a political comedy sketch. Here’s how it works.

Bringing Scarlett Johansson out onto the Weekend Update desk just to deliver an "apology" that only makes things a hundred times worse is peak SNL terrorism. Michael Che really had Colin Jost's actual wife sit there in front of millions of people while he explained that his unhinged roast jokes only happened because he’s "never even seen a human vagina" and spent a summer on a farm. Scarlett’s face the entire time is worth an Emmy on its own. Is Michael Che the most fearless menace in live television history, or is Jost just the most patient husband alive?

SNL’s “Toy Commercial” is a masterclass in turning a movie into comedy. Imagine taking one of the year’s most politically charged films and pretending it’s the toy every child wants for Christmas. That’s exactly the absurd idea behind SNL’s One Battle After Another sketch. Here’s why it works.

There is nothing worse than teachers treating intercepted notes like their own personal stand up comedy hour, but finding out a student wrote about watching the principal miss 133 layups in a row is an elite level of school drama. Teachers really will violate all privacy rights just to publicly roast themselves. Would you have kept your cool or started crying right there in the classroom?

This American Girl XL sketch is honestly one of the most unhinged and brilliant mock commercials SNL has done. Grown adults proudly presenting life-sized, uncanny dolls modeled after historical figures like Rosie the Riveter and Amelia Earhart is peak comedy.

Will Ferrell casually dropping the most devastating medical malpractice news of all time ("I accidentally removed your penis") like it's a misplaced chart is peak deadpan comedy. The absolute best part isn't even the mistake itself, it's that he managed to go to Mr. Shinto’s Hibachi Castle for lunch right after, completely distracted by the whole ordeal! You've got a patient sitting in a hospital gown dealing with the total existential dread of having a "flash furnace" cremation situation, and the doctor is out here critiquing Benihana. Comedic timing at its finest. Has anyone ever had a worse post-op conversation than this?

SNL’s “Trump Has to Make Some Urgent Phone Calls” is a lesson in turning the week’s headlines into comedy. Instead of one long political argument, the sketch connects Tiger Woods, Melania Trump and Pete Hegseth through a single premise: Trump making calls from the Oval Office. Here’s how it works

SNL took something as ordinary as making plans with family and turned it into a horror movie. The sketch is called Plans, starring Sabrina Carpenter and Ben Marshall. The terrifying part? Nothing supernatural happens. They simply remember a commitment they wish they had never made. And that is the joke. The sketch aired on October 18, 2025, during Sabrina Carpenter’s first episode as host and musical guest of SNL Season 51. Carpenter and Marshall play a couple enjoying a quiet weekend when they realize they have plans with her cousin and the cousin’s husband. Their reaction makes an ordinary social visit feel like a disaster.

There’s nothing quite like Will Ferrell committing 1,000% to a completely unhinged premise. A friendly neighborhood barbecue completely derailed because Ferrell’s character is violently obsessed with getting two neighborhood kids off his shed. He pauses polite small talk with the guests just to scream unprovoked death threats at teenagers in the background.
