I'm not the only one critical of California's month-long vote count. A Washington Post editorial calls it a "national embarrassment." The NY Times said our elections are in the "pre-telegraph era." It's another example of our state government struggling with basic competence.

A third of community college applicants were fake. $17 billion was spent on High-Speed Rail with no track. $24 billion in homelessness funds disappeared. $32 billion was lost to unemployment fraud. Medi-Cal and SNAP are rife with improper payments. This is Newsom's California.

Gerrymandering is a plague on democracy, one that Gavin Newsom has brought back to California. But there’s a way we can fight back and protect our democracy from his partisan games: by removing partisanship from the equation. Today, I filed for reelection as “No Party Preference.” This means I will not have a party affiliation on the ballot or as an officeholder. That’s how it already is with most offices in our state: mayors, city councilors, school board members, county supervisors, sheriffs, and DAs are all nonpartisan. As an elected representative, I’ve always seen my role as being an independent voice for our community, holding politicians in Sacramento and Washington accountable to serve my constituents. I answer to you, not party leaders. That’s the kind of representation I believe the newly-drawn Sixth District deserves. It is no secret I’ve been frustrated, at times disgusted, by the hyper-partisanship in Congress. In the last year it’s led to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, a massive increase in healthcare costs, and of course, a pointless redistricting war. The epidemic of gerrymandering has spread from Texas to California to states all across the country. Both parties are complicit. If there is one thing Americans agree on, it is that political division has become a serious problem for our country. We need to find ways for politics to bring us together as Americans rather than tear us apart as partisans. That means, for example, finding pragmatic solutions to make life more affordable rather than each side blaming the other for why it isn’t. We are also living in a moment of dramatic transformation, where technological change could bring incredible opportunities along with unfamiliar risks and dislocations. The ordinary rituals of partisan politics are simply inadequate in these extraordinary times – are simply incapable of meeting this generational challenge. Our ability to work as one team, serving all Americans, is now more important than ever.

Karen Bass is now giving cash cards to illegal immigrants "affected" by ICE. To get one, you just have to say you're too afraid to go to work. To hand out the cash she's chosen CHIRLA – the same "nonprofit" that instigated the riots after getting $34 million in public funds.

This is a new low. California is forcing Tahoe Truckee Unified to compete in CA instead of Nevada, despite this being impractical and unsafe for athletes whose seasons will move from Spring to Winter in a snowy area. The reason: Nevada doesn't allow males in female sports. For 40 years, Tahoe Truckee Unified has chosen to compete in Nevada because sports like soccer and tennis are played in the spring there. In California, these are winter sports, which is impractical in snowy areas like Tahoe and presents travel safety concerns. Yet the state has overridden this local decision for no other reason than to preserve the ability for biological males at the district’s schools to compete in the female division. This will decimate several sports, and schools in the district may not even be able to field teams.

I warned Newsom that requiring schools to keep secrets from parents about the name and gender used by their child was a clear violation of federal law. He signed the bill anyway. Sure enough, it was just blocked by the Supreme Court. Parents' rights are finally being restored.

Newsom says "bring it on" when it comes to a fraud investigation. We will. I'm working on a bipartisan audit of the entire state budget. We've already uncovered $32 billion in unemployment fraud, $24 billion in lost homelessness funds, and 1.2 million fake college applications.

We are fighting back against California's extreme partisan politics. And winning. We passed Prop. 36 in a landslide. We reversed the gas car ban. We cut off High Speed Rail funds. We quadrupled your SALT deduction. We got approval for the first new water storage in decades.

Why is it so stunningly easy to defraud the State of California? 1.2 million fake community college applications. $32 billion in unemployment fraud. $24 billion in homeless funds lost. $17 billion on a nonexistent High-Speed Rail. $650 million on a cancelled 911 system. We need answers. This is on top of a State Audit that just classified 8 separate agencies as at "high-risk" of serious "waste, fraud, abuse, or mismanagement," with the number doubling during Newsom's tenure. The Auditor found, among other things, that the State has missed 6 straight financial reporting deadlines and that massive improper payments for SNAP, Medi-Cal, and EDD are putting billions at risk.

I'm honored Governor Newsom has called an entire Special Election to gerrymander my district, just as I was honored when he sent his own staff member to run against me last year. We beat him by 46,000 votes then, and this latest attempt to stop our movement will fail as well.

Why does California take a month to count votes? It's the same reason the state allowed $32 billion in unemployment fraud, builds the worst roads despite the highest taxes, and spent $24 billion on homelessness as the problem got worse. A total lack of accountability.

California has the nation's costliest gas and electricity. Yet it's also among the worst states environmentally. Tankers bringing oil from across the world are massive polluters. So are wildfires. Yet again, failed policies mean we sacrifice the most and get the least in return.

California is the only state that offered "full scope" Medicaid regardless of immigration status. Costs grew to $10 billion in one year, enrolling 1.7 million people here illegally. Meanwhile, many California citizens on Medicaid can't get a doctor's appointment.
