In 1970, the Stanford butterfly biologist Paul Ehrlich made an ominous prediction: "Sometime in the next 15 years, the end will come." A guest on Johnny Carson that same year, he told viewers the two ways to prevent it: "One is to bring the birth rate down. The other is to push the death rate up." Ehrlich's The Population Bomb sold two million copies and was one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Carson brought him back roughly twenty times. In it, Ehrlich predicted famines killing hundreds of millions in the 1970s. About England, he said in a 1971 speech:. "I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000." None of this happened. But the idea had a profound impact. Population control became one of the central goals of the World Bank, USAID, and the Club of Rome's Limits to Growth. India's emergency sterilization campaign and China's one-child policy were influenced by Ehrlich's ideas. "Too many people" became the default viewpoint among America elites and Hollywood -- and then much of the public. Having children became something the planet was unable to afford. Having none became seen by some as a virtue. And having "too many" looked down upon. The value of children -- of life itself -- became debatable. Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973, came at the pinnacle of Ehrlich's influence. Virtually all of the West is now below replacement fertility. Marriage rates are at an all-time low. Fewer young people than ever "know if they want to have children". Millions of children are aborted each year in Europe and North America alone, with hundreds of millions aborted between 1973 and today. If those people were not aborted -- making no other changes -- the population of Europe would be 42% higher. Worldwide, a billion children are aborted every 13 years. That's 20 World War 2's every 13 years. Last month, abortions were legalized in Massachusetts at 9 months pregnancy. That's a baby. The heart is beating. The brain is working. It could be born alive, like any other full-term baby. Drugged, locked down, injected, masked, assigned to sex surgery, or neglected in school, many increasingly unable to read and write by the time they graduate, the value that society assigns to children has never been lower. The debate has now shifted -- in the recent Lindsay Clancy case -- to whether a woman might be excused for strangling her own children to death. Ehrlich was never held accountable to the impact of his ideas, whose impact on human life was perhaps greater than any man's in history. Instead, he was showered with awards. I can't stop thinking about the scene where Leonidas wishes Ephialtes a long life, and Ephialtes reacts with despair. Viewers often interpret Leonidas's words as an insult. It was not; he meant them genuinely; he was recognizing Ephialtes as a man. What commenters miss is the confusion that briefly flashes on Leonidas's face after he sees Ephialtes's reaction. This creates a completely different interpretation. Leonidas was not insulting Ephialtes. His confusion shows that he thought of Ephialtes's actions as instrumental, for personal gain. But the true cause of Ephialtes's betrayal--his resentment--is something he cannot relate to. It is beyond his comprehension. Ephialtes was offered a role with the Spartan army. Tending to the wounded. Helping with supplies. But because he physically cannot participate as an equal within the Spartan ranks and is therefore refused that role, he rebels. A case study from 2025 on Fauci's chosen method of prevarication. Scene: A appearance by Anthony Fauci at the New Orleans book festival, where he explains why "masks worked". In this clip, he starts by declaring: "masks worked". Applause follows. We should ask how applause is appropriate. Whether masks work is a scientific problem. It is not a moral or political position. Should a scientist be applauded for giving his or her scientific opinion? If they are, then it's not being treated as a scientific opinion anymore. The applause shows just how ideological the whole discussion on masking became--and remains. But what follows is remarkable. The interviewer pushes back and questions whether masks really worked, whether scientific evidence really supports that position. Fauci yields and pivots: "there's the rub, Walter, a proper mask, an N95 or KN95." In other words, the implication is that the cloth and surgical masks that he recommended during the pandemic didn't work, but N95s do. Which somehow still allows Fauci to say, "masks worked". Isn't this remarkable? Fauci started with "masks worked", i.e. the masks that were widely recommended and worn. And for this he was applauded. But now, without conceding the mistake of surgical and cloth recommendations, he maintains that "masks worked" but only "N95s or KN95s". It gets richer. Then Fauci digs in deeper: N95s and KN95s work, yes. But, but, but! Only if the N95 and KN95 is "properly worn, all the time". That is, the mask has to be properly fitted (and that requires professional assistance) with a proper seal, and worn all the time. Ergo, "masks worked". We've gone from cloth and surgical mask recommendations to properly fitted N95 and KN95 masks worn all the time. This is why "masks worked". Then Fauci digs in even deeper: but you cannot take the mask off to eat! People complain that they took the mask off to eat and got COVID. You can't do normal things and say masks don't work! The only way masks work if you live entirely abnormal lives. Therefore, according to Fauci, "masks worked". Here's the thing: Fauci has just enumerated all of the arguments against masks working in the real world, all the while affirming that "masks worked". He gets his cake and eats it too: On the one hand, clinical studies show that not only do surgical and cloth masks not work for respiratory pathogens in a variety of environments, N95s haven't been shown to work to reduce the risk of infection by a respiratory pathogen when worn over the course of the day in normal working conditions either. (This is probably, as other studies show, because the seal breaks within just a few hours--something Fauci alludes to--and because people take the mask off.) On the other hand, if you mask harder, if you do it absolutely perfectly, then they DO work. Ergo, "masks worked". Does anyone else see how twisted this logic is? I mean, masks don't work under most or all real-world conditions. BUT, they do in theory. Therefore "masks worked", and therefore (by implication) surgical and cloth mask mandates were not pseudoscientific or a mistake. And for that performance Anthony Fauci is applauded and lionized, and he goes on and on. And nobody in the tribe pushes back on the ridiculousness of it. They just turn off their brains. And clap. Today on CNN, after devastating study citations from the interviewer showing that masks don't work, Fauci responded: "but masks work on an individual level". But this is nonsense. Here's why. To do science on masks, you have a masked group and an unmasked group. You compare the rate of infection in each group. This is called a randomized trial. This is how science is done. If the rate of infection is the same, then masks don't work. This was what the studies on masks showed. No difference. Now, there is simply no such thing as scientific studies showing that "masks work at the individual level". Fauci either doesn't understand how science works or he is lying and making things up. It really is that simple. Fauci is saying gobbledygook in order to keep the idea of masks alive. It's incredibly shameful for Fauci to abuse science in this way. But it's par for the course in the way he has communicated science throughout the entire pandemic. Sad.
