ALERT: Taliban Confirm Detention of Two Americans For First Time, Most Likely Including Afghan-American Mahmood Shah Habibi The Taliban have, for the first time, officially confirmed that two American citizens are being held in Afghanistan, most likely including Afghan-American businessman Mahmood Shah Habibi. Speaking to TOLOnews, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said: “Two Americans are still in detention in Afghanistan. They were arrested for violating Afghan law. There are ways to resolve such issues, and in my view, the matter is not very serious. It is possible that their cases will be resolved soon. Their detention is legal, and their cases are in the courts. They had legal files, and we hope the issue will be resolved.” According to U.S. officials, one of the detainees is Dennis Coyle, an American academic and researcher who traveled to Afghanistan in 2025. Details about his detention remain limited, but he is reportedly under Afghan custody. The second, Mahmood Shah Habibi, is an Afghan-American businessman and former head of the civil aviation authority under the previous Afghan government. He disappeared in Kabul in 2022, and U.S. authorities believe he may be held by Afghan officials, although the Taliban have previously denied having him in custody. The Taliban’s confirmation comes as the U.S. Department of State has recently designated Afghanistan as a country supporting illegal detentions, highlighting rising tensions over the treatment of foreign nationals in the country.
