I was checking my gallery and came across a video of a group fight exercise we did a while ago. A pike formation charges a halberd line. We went through it multiple times and for this instance we were meant to run away if the charge was *convincing*.

Another great vid from the video is when the Raider defeats the Conqueror by axing his shoulder, the pauldron comes off. I'd love to see a videogame where armor bits fall down as you fight, as it happened in history, they're held together by tiny laces and straps after all.

Final update Demise has grown a lot in the past few days. Yesterday, he took his first short flight. This morning I took him out and... It just felt right. Everybody say goodbye👋

Cool thing about plate armor: You can polish it's surface till it becomes a mirror capable of reflecting light, color and even shapes. Here's a 1924 demonstration of how you can even read your watch on the armor's reflection.

Besides impressive acrobatics, Being able to bend your spine just makes plenty of important actions easier. Mounting a horse, aiming downwards, wrestling, getting up from the ground, etc.

It's a shame that the only time armor is portrayed as an advantage in Game of Thrones is when Jorah fights Qhotho. Martin actually cared to validate the different approachs his characters have to combat, but past season 1, Westeros just has inferior fighters.

The flanderisation of stormtroopers pisses me off. In their first ever onscreen appearance they clear a hallway of enemy soldiers, taking minimal casualties, with a full frontal assault. So much can be inferred about their equipment and skillset here.

The game allowed up to 4 player coop Players would be able to cast spells like fire/lightning balls, ice walls, and tornados. Notice how the tornado disrupts the boss' fire breath.

Another very valid reason to take off a helmet is Exhaustion. If you're so disoriented that you can't see blows coming or keep yourself on your feet.. Your head being protected isn't going to do you any favours.

The first actual battle sequence has amazing attention to detail in less than a minute: We get soldiers fighting on a line. At some point, the more experienced and well armed men breach the enemy lines. I like seeing a helmet dent under a fairly long hammer, but that it takes multiple blows to beat the guy senseless. Some close quarters action with comptent shoulderlocks and offensive use of a buckler. The infantry takes down stakes that the English have placed to block cavalry, and the latter approach slowly, by walking their horses.

I was actually not expecting the shield ramp to be that stable. Id love to see 500 guys go over it tho. Reconstruction in Nîmes, France by the group "Lorica Romana".

I love that you could switch to an over the shoulder camera where you AIM your MELEE weapon. Id love to see this system explored for more realistic armored fighting, where you aim at the gaps and push your opponent off balance etc.

Some people are being gaslit by the show. The Hound's quote "Meryn won because he had armor-" doesn't change that Syrio was beating TF out of the armored Lannister household guards with a wooden sword. He never lands a hit on Meryn, the armor doesn't play a role here.

Something I love about For Honor's original CGI concept showcase is when the Warden runs into a Viking in a stairway and switches to a halfsword grip. The walls would prevent him from using wider angles, so he adapts.

If your bad guys don't pose and actual threat you take away the good guys' chance to do something heroic. That's why you give them scenes where they flex what advantage they have (overwhelming resources for frontal assaults). We're missing this nowadays.

Alexander (2004) isn't only a pretty decent biopic, it has the best depiction of an ancient battle ever put to screen. It does a great job at depicting the equipment and tactics of the time, the brutality of combat and the unraveling of Alexander's strategy.

"Alatriste" (2006) also uses primary sources to inform it's depiction of the battle of Rocroi (1643). Francesco Guicciardini claims that during the Battle fo Rávena (1512) the Spaniards crawled under the legs of the German infantry, wielding knifes and swords. It's not an accurate portrayal for Rocroi, but it does melee combat justice.

As far as Warhammer 40k writing, I think "Angels of Death" is underrated. This scene is what made me buy into Space Marines' intepersonal drama.

Speaking off, I don't know who's coaching Dexter Ansell, but it is absolutely ridiculuous for a 9 year old to have such acting range. It's not that uncommon for a kid actor to be charming, but this scene left me speechless.
