Today’s #Harvest26 update comes from Gary Frank of Gary Frank Farms and Harvesting in Scott County. Frank and his team are at the beginning of their corn harvest, having cut 10,000 of their 80,000 acres to cut for this season. They started cutting a week ago with high moisture corn just inside Gove County with a sample load moisture of 30.4%. The field in Gove got hit early and hard with a couple hailstorms and they received about half of the rainfall of his Scott County fields, so yields there were a little lower at 60 bu./acre. Normal opening day for the feedyard high moisture pit is the Tuesday after Labor Day. The pit has already been open for two weeks this year. For the Scott County fields, Monday’s hand shelled sample was 35% moisture. The moisture tested at the feedyard today was 28% with a 52.2 test weight, a notably significant dry down. Yields were between 70-100 bu./acre. Frank commented that Scott County farmers may be disappointed in this year’s yields compared to last year’s bumper crop even with the rainfall seen this season. He also noted smaller kernels and uneven ear fill in the fields.
