Today in Rock History June 6, 1960 Steve Vai is born in Carle Place, Long Island, New York. He is a virtuoso guitarist known for his technical skill and innovative style. He’s collaborated with Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, and led a successful solo career. Vai studied guitar under Joe Satriani as a teenager and joined Frank Zappa’s band in 1980 at age 20. He went on to play with David Lee Roth on the albums Eat ‘Em and Smile and Skyscraper.

Today in Rock History June 11, 1981 During the Fair Warning tour, Van Halen performed three sold-out nights (June 11–13) at Oakland Coliseum. The June 11 show yielded some of their most celebrated audio bootlegs and footage — later used in promotional videos for Fair Warning — capturing classics like “Unchained” and “So This is Love?” The June 11 performance, in particular, has circulated widely as one of the best-sounding bootlegs from the Fair Warning era, showcasing the band at a creative and commercial peak with David Lee Roth on vocals.

Today in Rock History June 5, 1986 The iconic “Twist and Shout” parade scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was set on June 5th and filmed during Chicago’s real Von Steuben Day parade. Director John Hughes cleverly integrated the scene into the actual annual German-American parade, using real participants and spectators. A note on his shirt read, “Mr. Brad Delp. I am a lonely soul.” Boston’s hits include More Than a Feeling (UK No. 22, 1977) and Amanda (US No. 1, 1986). A public memorial service was held in Atkinson, New Hampshire was attended by thousands of fans and fellow musicians.

Today in Rock History April 5, 2002 Layne Staley, the 34-year-old lead singer of Alice in Chains, was found dead in his home from a heroin and cocaine overdose. Isolated by addiction, Staley had lost contact with much of the outside world. At the time of his death, the 6-foot (1.8 m) musician weighed just 86 pounds (39 kg), and his body was so decomposed it had to be identified through dental records.

Today in Rock History June 17, 1947 Keyboardist Gregg Rolie was born in Seattle, Washington. The co-founder of Santana and Journey, he sang lead vocals for Santana and was Journey’s lead singer for their first three albums before Steve Perry took over on their fourth. Rolie provided the signature Hammond organ sound on Santana classics like “Evil Ways” and “Black Magic Woman,” and sang lead on several early Journey tracks, including “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights.” He left Journey in 1980 but has reunited with both bands for special performances over the years.

Today in Rock History May 16, 2010 Ronnie James Dio, singer for Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band Dio, passed away at 67 after a six-month battle with stomach cancer. His career began in 1957 with The Vegas Kings, evolving through several name changes before becoming Elf in 1967. Opening for Deep Purple led to Dio’s collaboration with Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow, launching him to rock legend status. Dio’s final public appearance was at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards on April 8, 2010, where he received the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award. His influence on heavy metal and power metal remains immense, with “Dio” still symbolizing one of the genre’s most iconic voices.
