ASIM MUNIR’S CHILAS AIRFIELD PROJECT: CIVILIAN COVER, MILITARY PURPOSE? Repair and restoration of Chilas Airfield in occupied Gilgit-Baltistan has begun. This 4,500-foot (1,372-metre) British-era airstrip, originally built in 1927, remains fundamentally non-operational for commercial flights. It is deeply weathered, lacks modern navigation aids and safety protocols required for civil aviation, and has long been limited to PAF training aircraft, logistics planes, and helicopter operations. At its current length it is unsuitable even for routine fighter-jet operations. The ongoing upgrade is widely seen as Asim Munir’s personal priority — sold publicly as a “dual-use” facility that will also serve civilians, yet designed primarily to enhance military aviation capacity and strategic utility. Local media reports claim residents have thanked and appreciated Asim Munir. Pakistan’s military is carefully presenting the project as a future civilian airport. The real purpose, however, remains overwhelmingly military.
